Meet Liz Higgins of Millennial Life Counseling in North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Higgins.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Liz. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Millennial Life Counseling began in 2017, stemming from my counseling practice – and we’ve been growing ever since! After receiving my associate license in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2014, I worked for a year at an IOP and decided to begin my private practice on the side. I knew that my journey would eventually lead me to work with couples, my greatest passion and interest. When I had reached full licensure and my practice was in a place to expand, I made a move to create MLC.

My passion for working with millennials began on a double path; because I am one, and have been interested in the changing dynamics and experiences of couples in the modern world, and because many of my clients as a new therapist happened to be of the millennial demographic. I decided to use that and dove into the world of Gen Y, learning relevant information and staying up to date on the changes that millennial couples and individuals experience in their lives and relationships. Above all, my passion as a therapist and professional is to be a part of the positive movement towards healthy relationships, as these are what create healthy families and a healthier society at large. The most fulfilling part of life is found within our relationships and the journey to becoming our best self.

A huge way my practice has grown was through my blog. I began blogging and using online marketing as my main path for expansion from the very beginning. Without a doubt, I believe my efforts to create an online presence have led me to the many opportunities I have been given to share our practice and to educate others on relationships and healthy living.

MLC has been a true success, attracting millennials in Dallas who want to learn more about the relational skills none of us really learned in school or even in our families. As systemic therapists, we help clients explore their “full picture”, and focus less on pathology but more on relational dynamics, emotional security, defining a strong sense of self, and creating relationships and a life fostered by personal values, needs, and joy. We are truly passionate about what we do.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I am ultimately grateful for my tribe; those who surrounded me when I was putting a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into the formation of my business and group practice. Some of my greatest challenges were leaning into the unfamiliar areas of entrepreneurship, like feeling confident in my financial worth as a clinician. I’ve come a long way and love to help other therapists tap into their gifts and unique talents that they bring to the therapeutic process with others and to know their worth in what they do. Another challenge for me has been learning to have uncomfortable conversations with others. From pushing myself to do interviews on larger platforms such as MarketWatch, AAMFT national therapist training, CBS DFW news, and most recently in the works, The New York Times, I have grown in my abilities to share what I know about millennials and relationship dynamics in ways I never would have imagined. It has also been a huge growth step for me to learn to communicate with my team in ways that leave us all feeling connected, heard, and aligned on our mission and how we continue to serve our clientele.

Please tell us about the business.
Millennial Life Counseling is a group therapy practice that focuses on helping millennial couples, individuals, and families create the most epic and fulfilling marriages, relationships, and lives. We hold a high standard of care for our clients by bringing evidence-based therapies to our practice, and take a collaborative approach with each other to provide clinical support and encouragement in our roles as therapists.

Another large aspect of our services is premarital counseling. I wanted this to be a significant part of our practice because part of my dream is for us to help millennials know the relationship skills and tools necessary to maintain a long-term, committed relationship without having to be in a place of crisis before reaching out for help. The seven year itch has turned into the three year itch for our generation, and terms like “starter marriage” have been associated with millennials, indicating that it’s easier to call it quits for this generation. I am passionate about us reaching couples in good, healthy places in their relationship so that we can help them continue on good footing and lead them into the deeper and more vulnerable exploration of what their unique relationship needs to succeed.

We are known for making an impact on different online platforms, and my writings have been featured on The Huffington Post, The Gottman Institute Blog, Today.com, Prepare-Enrich, MarketWatch, Nerd Wallet, and more.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I am proud and grateful for the journey we have made so far! As a business owner, I think there are always growth areas and things that I could have done differently – but the reality is that all of the challenges and mistakes I have made to this point are a part of what has let me grow, discover, and renew my vision and development for our mission. If I had to start over, I would probably be more organized, as I am MUCH more of a processor and visionary when it comes to growth and development. The nitty gritty details are not my forte, and I could be better about documenting my journey and the exact formula I’ve taken to get here.
