Today we’d like to introduce you to Ava Skipworth.
Ava, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My son was 4 years old when I began to conceive of Monster Yogurt. It started with a dream of owning a little shop that would sell ice cream and frozen treats in my community, East Dallas. I left a 20-year career to peruse this dream. After considering many concepts I could not find one that fulfilled all the needs I wanted to fill. I wanted a place that could be fun and entertaining while serving treats, Additionally, I wanted a place for all age groups of people to go. This included small children.
The goal was to have a place to go with kids in tow. To accomplish this, I started from scratch. Between friends, the community, and a steering comity of 4-year olds, Monster Yogurt was created. We were well received and 6 years later we part of the fabric of the community.
Currently, I have built and operate two locations with two more scheduled to open in 2018. I am excited about the future of Monster Yogurt. Through franchising, I plan to bring this concept to more neighborhoods in DFW.
Monster Yogurt is truly unique and I am proud to have filled a need in my community. I am grateful it worked out. Starting with a new idea is risky.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting Monster Yogurt was not without obstacles and challenges. The most difficult challenge was leaving the comforts a cooperate job offers. When you are starting from scratch the buck begins and ends with you. There are no set hours and a boss does not coach you if you slack off. When asked by my friends, I reply that the hardest part of my day is getting out of bed. We have a good laugh and I roll up my sleeves.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Monster Yogurt – what should we know?
Monster Yogurt is a self-service frozen yogurt shop with an indoor playground for children. We have free Wi-Fi, coffee, and comfortable seating for the adults. We offer 80 toppings that can also be purchased by the ounce in a convenient bag called My-Mix. So, if you would like Crazy Bananas with your Dark Chocolate Expresso Beans, go for it! The free coffee bar is tied to a local charity. If the charity speaks to you, grab a cup and drop in some change. 100% of money collected goes to the charity. We also carry a large variety of scary bottled sodas like Bug Barf, Dinosaur Dung, Flying Cauldron Butter Beer, and Jones. If this were not enough to surprise and delight, we added a party room that can be reserved for birthday parties, sport team parties and the like. We also offer catering where we bring the party to you.
Monster Yogurt does a lot. However, if you were to ask a patron they would probably say it is the fresh whipped cream and hand rolled waffle cones that make us different.
What sets us apart is the sticky, gooey, deliciously disgusting scary yogurt creation that only YOU will love!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The most important characteristic that has contributed to my success is grit. I wake up every day and try to make my business better than it was the day before.
