Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanera Jones.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Tanera. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Well, growing up, I wasn’t really into makeup like that, actually. It wasn’t until my high school years where I would try and wear makeup more frequently. At the time, all I had was a foundation that was too dark for me, a cheap blue eyeliner, and mascara. It was like the bare minimum of a slay.
Once I graduated high school in 2012 and moved to the DFW, It was like a whole new world for me. Girls had the full face beats. I had honestly never seen makeup like that, so I was like determined to learn. I binged all things makeup on YouTube for years and just practiced alongside with some cheap makeup I bought. Makeup became my passion during this time because I really didn’t have much going for me at the time. I was very ill with an auto-immune disease and I was taking a break from college. So I just felt like I really needed to find something I was good at. Just so happen, it was makeup.
Once the new year came around in 2018, I felt pretty comfortable posting my makeup looks on IG. My looks were far from decent but with every look I became more and more confident and my looks were actually getting pretty creative. After gaining this confidence, so to say, and everybody literally asking me to do their makeup, I decided to start taking clients. After having a few clients, one being a beautiful bride, I knew more than ever. This was definitely the path for me. So now, I’m definitely just in a space of being focused on growing my talents. I’m starting my own cosmetics line and hope to build a portfolio of clients this year.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I originally had the idea to start my own business at the very end of 2018 and wanted to launch by mid 2019. However, 2019 had other plans for me. I went through a lot in 2019 and feel into a depression. I’ve suffered with anxiety and depression for quite some time. It seemed like every time I had my finances in order, something else was not in line and vice versa.
So I was lost but my passion for makeup never went away. So as I was working through my emotions and depression, I was also working on my business and just brainstorming, reading, and trying to get as much knowledge as possible. I also enrolled in some Beauty Essentials classes online. It’s been hard to balance everything with work and life but I know it will pay off in the end. So I just have to stay focused on that.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Super Beauty Cosmetics story. Tell us more about the business.
So Super Beauty Cosmetics will be launching this Summer 2020. It’s a makeup/cosmetic brand that’s based on my love for makeup and super hero’s. I’m also a super foodie, so I have some plans to incorporate like food-themed makeup products as well. Ultimately, I want my brand to represent my love for beauty and just having fun. There are no rules to makeup and I want my brand to be fun. I’m super excited and nervous to finally start this journey but also anxious to see where it could take me in terms of the beauty community.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck really has no part in my business or life. I take plenty of losses but also so many wins. I just try to remain focused on my main goal, no matter how crazy my personal life gets. I used to always say I was a person with bad luck but I really don’t believe in luck anymore. Just blessings.
