Today we’d like to introduce you to Monte Berry.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Monte. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
That’s The Cake began in a home of Nancy Newsom back almost 20 years ago, she did it as a hobby for family and close friends. In 2008, she began to see a higher demand for her baked goods, therefore she formed the name That’s The Cake in 2009 and open her location in Lewisville, TX first, we’re now rooted in North Arlington, TX. Over the years, business has grown rapidly and continues on a path of excitement. In November 2016, we were featured on INSP’s Original Series State Plate with American Idol’s Taylor Hicks for our rich, divine, Texas Sheet Cake. We’re located in one of the fastest growing cities in America and we hope that we continue to please all of our beautiful and special clientele.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Over the years, as many businesses do, we’ve had financial issues that caused Nancy to make some real difficult decisions, as one being her home being let go. She gave it up for the bakery. We’ve had many challenges with employees meeting our high standard of expectations, and it’s been obstacles of training of many hours to make sure our expectations are kept where they should be.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our bakery specializes in a little bit of everything. We offer custom cakes for all occasions, whether it be; Wedding and Groom’s Cakes, Birthdays, Baby Showers or Gender Reveals, Just because it’s Wednesday Cakes, Cupcakes, Cookies, Macarons, The Legendary Texas Sheet Cake, Cakeballs and Cakepops, Cheesecakes, and a wide variety of pastries.
We’re known for our melt-in-your-mouth chocolate chip cookies, and the Wedding Cake Cupcakes. As a company we set ourselves apart by putting the customer first.
We’re some of the most determined bakers and cake artist in the industry, as creating and researching recipes all the time – trying to find that next big fad!
What were you like growing up?
Growing up as a kid in a small town, you knew everyone, and everyone knew you, your parents, and even your grandparents. I always knew I was going to be that person to help the person next to me, very outgoing, and talkative. I talk too much. At the age of 13, I began realizing that I was different in many ways from the ordinary child. I wanted to be a business owner, so I began purchasing (with the help of my dad) DJ equipment to start a side business whilst in junior high and high school. Over the years, I did tons of work for my school district from hosting Spring Flings, Homecomings, End-Of-The-Year Celebrations, Football, Volleyball, and Basketball games as the designated sound technician, and my all-time favorite was Pep Rallies – tons of excitement and spirit in a tight-knit gym. It was great success, during my tenor in school. My grandfather had for many years owned a BBQ Restaurant in my hometown, Salado. Which I had a big part in as it was something about working in a restaurant that made me so happy. But it was when I graduated high school and a week later I moved to Fort Worth with my grandmother (Nancy) to begin school at a technical college, finished the degree and at the same time was working at That’s The Cake with zero knowledge of baking. As time progressed I realized I love what I’ve been blessed with learning. Which then led me to join the Culinary School of Fort Worth as a current student and love it sooooo much! I finish and officially become Chef Monte, December 2017. After I finish school, I have several goals in place, some of which will take years to become a reality, but I just take everything one single step at a time.
