Today we’d like to introduce you to Desmond Witherspoon.
Desmond, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I really like making stuff, and I think most of us do in some capacity. To be more specific, I really like making things with other people. Throughout life I’ve been fortunate to meet a lot of people with special gifts, passions, and abilities. It’s crazy how dope some people’s ideas can be, but I really feel the fire when we can turn it into something real like a business or piece of art. My siblings and family support helped me see on the other side of our humble beginnings and think big every chance I could. Business is where the idea of being creative really began with me, so I would work with people wanting to start businesses and started offering services related to that entire process. That kind of turned into consulting and trying many endeavors of my own with some wins and some good lessons along the way, but then I bumped into film. It was like this perfect combination of business, creativity, teamwork, and pure artistry mixed into like the most fire pot of entertainment gumbo you can imagine. Bringing people so diversely talented together for a production really helps you appreciate how important the idea of teamwork truly is.
Media and film became a major focus for me after partnering up with Q Lee, a good friend of mine, on a reality dating series called Bae or Boot. I then teamed up with Jalen Jones and his brand Media Sensei. We had a great combination of skills and learned a lot from one another which has let us plant some seeds for our successes here at Jem Studios in Deep Ellum where we are based out of. Today we’re digging in on a few projects we can release later this year while also continuing to make ideas come to life for our clients who put a lot of trust in us with their visions.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
You know when you zoom out things tend to smooth out a little, but yea… if you zoom in to the day by day, you run into obstacles that really throw things out of wack. You get ready for a big shoot and realize you haven’t got a way to store all the footage or whatever and then… is that rain I feel? Those days are frustrating, but learning lessons is what makes those 10,000 hours you actually put into something really worth it. I think I’m actually pretty good at messing stuff up so I just try to prepare for those bumps the best I can ya feel me haha.
Please tell us about the business.
So Media Sensei is a brand that creates media. I purposely say it like that to convey that we aren’t only focused on being a video production company. It’s a brand that is meant to activate creators and we work with people in a lot of different ways. We make web series, short films, and commercials and that’s a major part of our growth. However, we also help create businesses by providing services and concepts for entrepreneurs. That includes things like website design or even an automated marketing campaign. The more creative open thinkers we can succeed with on a project the better! No matter the service, our goal is to help those who believe in us create something for the world to see. We just usually do it with lights and cameras haha.
What sets us apart though? Just going for it. With all the trends and waves that happen it becomes easy to just follow proven formulas, but I find a uniqueness in setting up the parts and just letting some things happen organically. Every person, every day, every interaction is a unique situation. When creating content, we try to leave as much room as possible for actual spontaneity to occur. I think it gives us a kinda style that will inevitably be unique.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Success is really a day by day thing. Every day I have to make the decision to move forward. Sometimes moving forward is easy because we just got a big deposit and the calendar lines up perfect, but some days there’ll be nothing but issues and not enough time to solve them the way you would like. I suggest you keep going and make tiny improvements. When you need a jump start do something bigger, but checking off one thing a day will get you closer to where you want to be, I promise. Want to know what happened right before we started collecting some wins? Nothing special, we just kept making small consistent steps and one day we looked up to double and triple revenues. Other than that, activating the power that resides within you all starts with yourself. You must take care of the mind, but first you have to take care of the body. Doing it in that order feels necessary to me.
