Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayashree Krishnan.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am an Indian American who came to Dallas, Texas in 1998 after marriage. Everything around me was new, but I was interested in exploring the lifestyle, food, and culture of this country. I specifically found a great interest in international cuisine. While growing up in India, there was no concept of baking at home. The only interest that I had was to watch my mother cook and learn her recipes on how to make authentic South Indian food. I began to cook different varieties of food for my family only after I moved to the US. The more I explored and experienced some of the best desserts in the city, I developed an interest in baking. Once I had my children, I began to search for fun baking recipes. My children were one of the main reasons that allowed me to find my passion for baking as they encouraged me and enjoyed having whatever desserts I made.
As the years went by and my kids became more independent, I decided to pursue my career in teaching as I also enjoyed teaching kids, whether it be for education, baking, or crafts. I completed my Master’s degree in Education at Dallas Baptist University in 2012 and began to work at a private school in Dallas. My motivation to teach was to help the youth, especially with learning differences. Working full time didn’t provide me enough time to try out new baking recipes, but my love for baking didn’t cease, and I continued to bake for my children and friends on special occasions. The act of baking has become a way for me to express my love for the arts. I create what I want to create, however simple or complex my creation may be. Recognizing my love for this art, my family and friends encouraged me to start my own bakery, which last year led me to develop “Jay’s Creations” – a customized bakery at my home.
Has it been a smooth road?
Initially, it was quite difficult for me to decide if I wanted to continue my teaching career. I had invested a lot of time and effort in developing my love for teaching, but I also wanted to follow my passion for baking. In order to have a balance between my love for teaching and baking, I decided to work part-time as an educator, and as a result I was able to spend more time to further improve my baking skills. Being new to this home-based bakery, it took me a while to gain knowledge on marketing customized cakes, cupcakes, and other baked goods. With the help of my family’s support, I have been able to spare more time to use my creativity and unique ideas at baking. Working on different baking projects provides me with joy and a creative freedom to make whatever I envision.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Jay’s Creations story. Tell us more about the business.
Jay’s Creations is a customized bakery that I started at my home in 2019. We provide creative cakes, cupcakes, and mini-desserts for parties and special occasions. Everyone knows that frosting a cake takes a longer time than using a readily available fondant. I specialize in frosted customized cakes with beautiful colors and unique designs. When I take an order, I make sure I do it with love and dedication. Whenever my customer sends me a feedback complimenting me on my unique designs and how everyone at his/her party was impressed with the cake, I get excited and am satisfied for all the time and effort invested. I am proud of my accomplishments as I am able to use my creativity and do what I love, which is what I believe sets me apart from others in this competitive market. My journey has been an interesting one from being an educator to a baker, and I am excited to see what my future holds.
