Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Reed.
Brittany, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Professionally, my journey in the hair industry started when I was 20 years old but growing up, I was always interested in hair. Whether it was braiding hair at sleepovers and in the locker room or cutting my own hair in the bathroom at home, doing hair was always my creative outlet. I did well in school so I think the assumed path for me was college but it never really fulfilled me. When I attended Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy, I really started to see myself building a career in the industry. That was only the beginning of my passion for education. Every decision I’ve made in my career has been fueled by my desire to keep learning. Since then I have done apprenticeships, worked behind the chair and managed. I have been in the industry over six years and even now as a suite owner, I’m always looking forward to the next chapter.
Has it been a smooth road?
Of course everyone has their own obstacles they face in their careers, but I think the beauty industry is especially hard to tap in to. Foremost, I have always supported myself. When you choose the apprenticeship route, you are investing in yourself long term but likely forfeiting financial comfortability. I have done this twice. Secondly, finding a salon home was a bumpy road for me. While I have worked at two salons that were both great in a lot of ways, neither of them was a good fit for the business and life I wanted to have long term. I always knew my goal and purpose was to eventually work for myself and I am super grateful to be at a place in life now where I am doing that. I wouldn’t change a thing about my journey so far, regardless of the challenges.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I have a suite called Mane Rebels where I specialize in cutting, balayage and color correction. I also focus heavily on business and management. I think I am most known for my low maintenance styles. Low maintenance + high energy is the vibe of my business and it’s definitely reflected in my work and personality. Mane Rebels is centered around a culture of loving and serving others. I work very hard to make my chair a safe space for everyone. I am most proud of the relationships and personal connections I have made through my business with clients and other professionals in the industry. It’s more than just hair. I think being personable is everything.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas is the perfect city to start a career in the beauty industry. I am super lucky to be in a city full of the most talented professionals and unlimited education and resources. There is a niche for everyone regardless of what you specialize in. The resources are definitely here to set yourself up for success. If I had to give advice to anyone looking to start out in the city, I would say the best thing you can do is to invest in your education and find a mentor.
