Meet Jan Brown of Jantastic Petsitting in Denton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jan Brown.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve had animals all of my life, as far back as I can remember. My mom would take me to McKinney Trade Days as a kid and we’d come home with the newest addition to our family. It got to where my dad would try to keep us from going because we already had so many pets. When I got married and moved out, I had my very first pets that were just mine, a rat terrier named Butch and three cats named Raja, Shadow and Sosh. Flash forward to their senior years and senior health problems and I spent a LOT of time at the vet clinic and researching ways to help my pets. I was told by my vet that I’d make an excellent Veterinary Technician. That really stuck in my head and since I was feeling completely unfulfilled in my current career I decided to take the leap into the Veterinary field. I started off working for a mobile vaccination clinic on the weekends while I continued to work my fulltime job in the accounting field. I LOVED working with pets on the weekend and decided to do it fulltime. I found a clinic that was willing to train me and became a veterinary technician. Friends and neighbors then started asking me to pet sit for them as they liked that I had Veterinary experience. I started to experience burnout being a technician. Some days were very hard, seeing nothing but sick pets and pets that had to be euthanized. I decided that pet sitting was a much happier career choice. I love keeping pets comfortable in their own homes and avoiding the stresses that come along with boarding at facilities. Now I do pet sitting full time and help at a local clinic in my free time. Doing so helps keep me current with the newest trends in veterinary medicine so that I can stay informed and give my clients the best possible care.

Has it been a smooth road?
Taking the leap into veterinary medicine was hard. Financially, I took a HUGE cut in pay to do something I loved. I had to give up some things to cut back on expenses, and would take some pet sitting jobs to make extra money. Thanks to my husband’s encouragement and reassurance, I was able to start my own pet sitting business.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Dallas is a great city. Before moving to the suburbs, I lived in uptown Dallas. I enjoyed being a Dallas Maverick season ticket holder and having a wide variety of restaurants and entertainment to choose from.
