Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Henderson.
Shelby, before we jump into specific questions about the company, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In February 2012, the Lord placed on my heart to start O’Glory Grill & Catering. I had just finished culinary school the prior year and knew that it was a part of my purpose to start my business. My background is in business and hospitality; I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Entrepreneurship and a Master’s Degree in Management and Leadership.
Becoming a woman entrepreneur at a young age was challenging, but rewarding. Shortly after launching my business, I became very overwhelmed. There was no balance between my personal life and business life; which is key when it comes to entrepreneurship. I was carrying a heavy burden during that time which led me to “take a break” and move to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia for a year.
After returning back to the United States, I picked up where I left off with my catering business. Shortly after a year or two, I started a meal prepping service called “FitKitch Camp”. In 2019, O’Glory Grill & Catering was changed to O’Glory Catering Company.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Becoming a woman entrepreneur at young has not been easy. I had to learn how to balance my career as a chef and just be Shelby. It was quite overwhelming. I had to teach myself how to manage my time (VERY important), re-evaluate myself as a business owner, and look for ways to improve my brand. Learning to say “no” to those who don’t value my brand has been a real issue for me, but I found a better solution in denying service to an inquirer. Nevertheless, I would not have had it any other way. I love a good challenge. The rewards are phenomenal. And if you pay close attention to the obstacles, you will find out more about yourself.
Please tell us about your company.
O’Glory Catering Co. is a faith-based company creating unique experiences with southern cuisine infused with flavors from other regions. We provide services throughout the DFW metroplex with the option of traveling to your private location outside the metroplex. We specialize in private chef experiences, corporate/private catering, weddings, and church events just to name a few.
I am most proud of how God has truly sustained me and my business during this pandemic. I wasn’t doing too much business because I wanted to make sure I was in compliance with CDC guidelines. However, I took the time to use the necessary resources given to me and develop greater ways of getting our name out there. There are always opportunities for growth, even in a pandemic. We just have to learn how to pivot ourselves to the trends of current events taken place.
I believe what sets us apart from others is our exceptional service. We based ourselves on Christian principles. We believe that serving is a ministry and we want our clients to be confident in knowing that we have everything taken care of.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My future plans are to find a permanent home for my brand and eventually, I will like to start a private culinary school. I am a bookworm and love to teach others. I am looking forward to adding virtual cooking tours until travel regulations are completely lifted. I want to create another cookbook-a real one as I would say. Haha. I will be starting a YouTube channel soon as well. Mostly, adding different pieces to keep my brand relevant and fun.
