Meet Dana and James-Ryan Leach of Ry’s Ties in McKinney

Today we’d like to introduce you to James-Ryan Leach, and his mom, Dana Leach

Dana and James-Ryan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
James-Ryan is 15 and has had an affinity for ties since he was a young child. In the sixth grade, he began to wear them to school every day and wanted to start an Instagram account (@rythetieguy) so his family could see his daily pictures. In the search to find ties for him, we discovered that there really aren’t a lot of places to find ties for sixth grade boys.

We are always looking for opportunities for James-Ryan to excel and have the best chance for growth and success. We thought having his own business would give him the perfect chance to learn many life skills while meeting new people, so we started this business with the intent that it would be online orders only. One thing led to another and we became a part of markets and pop up events across the metroplex which has really been a fantastic way to meet people, share the story behind Ry the Tie Guy and advocate for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Along the way, we have met some great people who share our entrepreneurial dreams and are also using their business opportunities to make a social impact on their communities. It’s an honor to be in community with like minded business owners who really want to make a difference.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course Covid, but beyond that we are learning the ins and outs of marketing, customer experience, purchasing, and many other aspects of business that none of us knew about going into this endeavor. We’re still learning.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Ry’s Ties – what should we know?
We are an online source of men’s fashion accessories. www.rythetieguy.com We also have fun socks for the entire family. I am most proud of James-Ryan’s determination to be successful. He is a part of every order that is fulfilled. He has been to market, done inventory, prepared orders, set up at events, and is the sole brand rep of Ry’s Ties. He has grown as a person and loves to interact with our customers. The team is also proud to be a social give back company. Twenty percent of our profit supports inclusive opportunities for employment, recreation and friendship at the Inkorporated Community. www.inkorporated.org

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
It’s been a family affair for sure. During our first year in business we were invited to participate in a large number of retail events, and it took all hands-on deck to make it happen. Our high school kids had the soccer team over one night and we put them to work on inventory in exchange for school spirit socks. They were thrilled and so were we.

Also, a special shout out to Dad, Jim Bob, who is the support guy making all of the technology and many other aspects of the business work smoothly.

Of course a huge thank you to our loyal customers, family and friends old and new who support us by telling the story of Ry’s Ties, purchasing, sharing on social media and helping with the various events. We are so humbled that people share in our vision.
