Today we’d like to introduce you to Laresha Harris.
Laresha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
From a young age, the ability to creatively express myself through art, music, and fashion has been a personal value of mine. Creative expressions have become a means to develop and maintain healthy mental balance of self-care, self-confidence, and self-love. A Gurl & Her Brush was created to cultivate a safe space for me to be fearless, be vulnerable, and to be heard in a world where it’s becoming more difficult to embrace your true self without intense scrutiny. As an African American Professional in today’s world, it’s important to be poised, be polished, be strong but not too strong… A Gurl & Her Brush is a creative outlet that allows for mental, emotional, and physical freedom. Every thought, feeling, memory evoked is in the throw of the paint, the stroke of the brush, and left on the canvas… A Gurl & Her Brush has become at times my saving grace and I’m grateful for the courage to share that grace with the world.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The process of creative expression through any Avenue is never easy but worth the journey. A Gurl & Her Brush has only recently become a vision that gets sharper by the day. My Art is inspired by my love, hate, beauty, fear, and struggle with the world. We all can relate how easy that struggle can be and also how difficult it can be as well. Having an increased awareness of my mental and physical healthy, supports me being a better artist by being more present and focus with the task at hand. As an emotional creator I welcome challenges and obstacles. Each experience makes me more proactively bold, allows me to better a better observer of the art around me, and it makes me more determined to live fearlessly. I’ve learned to use my art as a way to maintain mental health and self-care. Most of my art never makes it to public view and I’ve learned to be okay with that. My journey is not meant for everyone and neither is my art. The art is a process of release, recluse, and relief. I will forever be challenged with adversity but I’m aware that with each learning comes a new opportunity to enhance and perfect my craft.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the A Gurl & Her Brush story. Tell us more about the business.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe luck favors anyone who believes they are lucky… My life and my art are deeply rooted in gratitude. Gratitude for my ability to dream and imagine. It keeps me energized. Gratitude for my ability to create. It keeps my inspired. Gratitude for my ability to not only learn but unlearn. It keeps me humble. Gratitude for my ability to influence and teach. It keeps me motivated. Although difficult at times, finding gratitude in my personal experience leads to reflection of self and my practice that will be further applied or lost. Daily gratitude changes my physical, mental, and spiritual energy. I believe this energy shows up in my art, in my beliefs, in the way I treat people and the way people treat and support A Gurl & Her Brush.
