Meet Jemila Medley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jemila Medley.

Jemila, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began singing, dancing, and performing at a very young age but was hesitant to perform and sing my own original music. In January of 2016, I took a leap in my faith and decided to start writing contemporary Christian music. As I had begun writing my music, I realized how natural it felt and how much I enjoyed writing worship music. Worship has always been a huge part of my life and who I am. Anyone who knows me knows how sacred and special worship is to me.

During the time when I began writing my music in 2016, I met my now husband who encouraged me to pursue my music and has taken the role as my manager. In 2018 we decided to move to Dallas, TX from our small hometowns in Southern New Jersey to see what God had in store for us in this new, big city. We moved to Dallas with the intention to seek God’s purpose over our lives and to pursue Him. I knew that God wanted us in Dallas for a reason and we did not give up. In August 2019, we were introduced to our music producer, Mr. Damention of New Damention Studios in Fort Worth, TX. I began recording and creating my own original songs with my producer in September 2019 and continue to work with him on my upcoming projects.

I did not get to where I am today overnight. As I mentioned in the first sentence, I began using and building my talents at a very young age but lacked the courage to use those gifts the way that God intended for me. It took me many years to take that step out on faith and pursue what God wanted for me. When I finally took that leap and gave all of my fears, worries, and anxieties to God my entire life shifted and here I am today.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has never been a “smooth” road and I don’t intend for it to be. With struggle and obstacles come so much change and growth.

Many of my struggles were with my personal fears and self-doubt. I was the main standstill, blocking the way of my blessings. It took me so long to realize that and to admit that, but being in a place of constant self-doubt and fear was the biggest struggle that I went through. I thought I was not good enough, I thought that no one would want to hear my music, I thought that I was getting too old, I worried how I would even carry out a music career…all of those doubts and fears had no place in my heart or my mind because God sees me as so much more than that. Once I realized how much God wanted to use me, it broke my heart to see how much time I felt like I had wasted not using my gifts for God’s glory. So here I stand today pursuing my music, sharing my spiritual gifts with the world, with my sole purpose for everything I do now being to Glorify God.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am an independent contemporary Christian singer and songwriter. My first single was released in May of 2020 followed by my EP in June 2020. My brand and my music represent choosing faithfulness over self-doubt and fear. I am most proud that I have been able to live out God’s purpose over my life and use every piece of talent he has given me. I make a conscious effort daily not to compare myself to others because God made no one else like me or you or anyone else…so let’s be that person He has called each of us to be in order to change the world and glorify His name.

Where do you see yourself in the next decade in the music industry?
My hope and prayer is that within the next 5-10 years, I will have multiple albums and EP’s published for people all around the world to worship! A huge goal of mine is to also perform weekly at churches, seminars, schools, worship services, etc., where I can share my testimony and actively worship with others.
