Meet Rachana Cherry of Edible Perfections in Lewisville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachana Cherry.

Rachana, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It started with my son’s 5th birthday. When asked which cake he wanted for his birthday, he responded with “something special with angry birds”. Being a crafty mom, I decided to try my hand at a functional angry birds’ cake. While it was a stretch of my imagination, the results were impressive. Not only was there an angry birds’ cake, there were also fondant angry birds to be used in slingshots, pigs, and other game pieces. The entire set-up was edible, making it a complete angry birds’ experience. The kids had a wonderful time launching the birds from the slingshot. While my son enjoyed his “something special”, family and friends were in awe of my creation. This led to me receiving orders from family and friends, and then friends of friends, and thus, Edible Perfections was born. What started as a hobby to impress my kids, is now a growing business, with my edible creations being shipped across the globe.

I love experimenting with creative ideas. My experiments have provided me the canvas to perfect the art of edible creations. I create custom designed cakes, cupcakes, and edible toppers for every occasion. I sell them online through my website (www.edibleperfections.com) and Etsy, and have shipped my creations worldwide. I have hundreds of admirers and have consistently received 5-star reviews on Etsy, Google, Facebook and my website.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The first year of running my business was an expected slow growth, which also helped me spend time with my then four-year-old and seven-year-old. Things were starting to pick up and in Feb 2016, I’d just crossed a milestone of a couple of hundred sales. Less than a month later, in March 2016, I was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia). The only symptom was tiredness that just wouldn’t go away. Without any plan or warning, our lives completely changed!

After completing intensive chemotherapy at UT Southwestern Hospital, Dallas, I was following a monthly outpatient chemo regimen when we hit another roadblock. In Oct 2016, I contracted an infection due to a compromised immune system and ended up in the ICU. I was in the ICU for three months, on a ventilator, and underwent a multitude of emergency procedures and resuscitations. When I finally left the hospital in April 2017, I was a shadow of my previous self. The intensive chemos, prolonged ICU hospitalization, and multiple surgeries left me wheelchair-bound for a long time. After undergoing months of physical therapy, I learned how to walk again. And, began rebuilding my life.

Through my recovery and physical therapy, I doubted if I’d ever reopen my business. In a business where the products are creative handmade objects that require hours of work, sustained health issues felt like an impossible obstacle to overcome. I remained determined and restarted my business in Oct 2017. It took me a few months to re-establish my presence. It was a much-needed exercise in regaining my sense of independence and self-worth.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I grew up in India and was always surrounded by a large family and many friends. Food was an integral part of our celebrations. We gathered and celebrated around food. I was also active in theater and dance. So in a way my business now lets me combine creativity and food. With Edible Perfections, I wish to play a small role in our customer’s celebrations of their life events.
