Meet Collin Mai of Cosmo Nail Bar in Arlington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Collin Mai.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Collin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
There really isn’t much to my story. I grew up with an older brother and our family was perfect. Once I graduated high school, I began taking course at Tarrant County College. My emphasis on studying was drawn towards entrepreneurship. Every inch of my extended family never went to college, they never pursued higher education and I was surrounded by business my whole life. After two years in college, I found myself in position to potentially make a career out of what I like to do. With the advice of mentors and support of my immediate family, I was able to start what I have today Cosmo Nail Bar. I took a semester off from taking classes and I began planning what I see as a luxury establishment for all to enjoy.

After seeing how a majority of nail salons operate in Arlington, I figured my mission would be to perfect the industry. My mission is to uphold the highest standards of nail care and client care. To do so, I constructed a team of professionals committed to offering only the best of quality services and products. This includes keeping up with current trends while still keeping the classics available for our customers. After building the place from scratch, I have made friends and created valuable relationships in the industry in order to meet everything I need.

Honestly, everything I have been able to accomplish is based on what I would like to see in customer care. As I was growing up, I always wanted to make a name for myself. Metaphorically, I have been dealt a hand of cards in life and I am just playing it to the best of my ability. I apply that to my life and I believe if we all maintain that mindset, then we can all be successful in our own right. I plan on pursuing a degree in Financial Analysis in the near future that will be able to assist my goals in expanding Cosmo. As a young 20-year-old, I have much to learn, but I feel confident in my ability to succeed.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle I faced in being an entrepreneur is that to many, no one took me seriously. I had to proof to multiple people in the industry that I am 100% confident in the decisions that I make. Once that bridge was crossed, I have found a new sense of respect in everything I do. Of course there will always be obstacles and challenges in life.

However, I saw it more as just a few pieces of red tape. I had to take each day one step at a time in order to accomplishing my ultimate goal in Cosmo. That meant spending a lot of long nights researching aspects of running a business and proper marketing tools. I never saw it as time being wasted. I figured the best investment is self-investment. I am becoming savvier the more I engulf myself into the culture of those around me. As long as I am always improving, I am confident that any obstacle I face in the future will be manageable.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory has to be the time I got to spend with all of my cousins. Growing up, we are all doing our own things now and we do not get to see each other as much. Looking back on it, I will cherish all of the dumb things kids do since there will never be a time like that again.
