Today we’d like to introduce you to Ricky West.
Ricky, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born December 4, 1993, and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, moved to Virginia for high school and eventually ended up in Texas. I am a father of one handsome little boy. I’ve been drawing since I was three years old. I get my ability to draw from my father. It’s been a lot of hardships along the way, especially when I lost my mother when I was 12 years old. That molded me into the person I am today, along with the support from my son’s mother and my family.
I first got introduced to tattooing in 2011 when some friends convinced me I should think about doing them. I studied what I could on my own for about 3-4 months. So, in 2012 is when I officially started tattooing. I started tattooing in Virginia and continued my career in Texas. I was self-taught, it’s was kind of hard because I didn’t have any guidance. That just made me adjust and I kept pushing myself drawing and tattooing designs I didn’t like just to make myself uncomfortable, so I could grow. In, 2017 I finally got into the tattoo shop that I’ve always wanted to work and that’s “Kings Tattoos” in Dallas, TX. I’m surrounded by great artists and friends. If I had to do it all over to get where I’m at now, I would. It’s a humbling feeling.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Some of the hardships would were trying to figure out who I was as an artist, along with Self-doubt and depression. Not know whether or not I could achieve the success I have thus far. Having nights where I didn’t feel like drawing or creating. That was one of my darkest hours.
We’d love to hear more about your art.
I’m a full-time tattoo artist. I feel like what sets me apart from everyone else is my ability to never make myself feel comfortable. Meaning, I’m always willing to learn and grow. I strongly dislike staying stagnated. I’m always trying to elevate and become a better version of myself as an artist than I was the day before. I proud and grateful for all of my supporters because without them, I wouldn’t be where I am. I love creating a lifetime of work for them, that they love and will be with them forever.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My family, they’ve always supported me and my son’s mother for pushing to never give up. My mentor Tony Garcia he’s an amazing artist and friend. He gave me an opportunity to showcase my talents and had faith in me. He’s definitely played a big part in my growth today as an artist and I’m very grateful for that.
