Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Guinn.
Jeff, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I went from high school straight into the U.S. Navy for a four year stint. After my time served, once back in civilian life, I quickly realized I needed a skill that translated into the everyday work world. I took the time to attend college, and developed very crucial business skills. I also had grown up in the business of HVAC and home appliance repair and had several years of experience under my belt, even at that young age. I had the opportunity to come down to Dallas and become a Whirlpool technician for almost a decade. I decided to strike out on my own and started my business out of my garage in south Fort Worth 20 years ago, this past April. We’ve been fortunate and have grown steadily ever since.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of the first things I realized was the fact that just because I was a good technician didn’t necessarily translate into the skills required to actually run a business or manage people. I had to figure out how to keep my business healthy and growing. I researched and found the in-home appliance repair trade has an association for business owners like myself. I began attending the yearly trade shows and took as many classes as possible each year. These yearly conventions were a major player in the development of Guinco After a few years of this, I was honored to join one of the top industry peer groups in the nation. This group of guys of guys were all owners of similar businesses around the country. We held each other accountable for business practices and conducted audits of our businesses. During my time in the peer group, I learned I needed to start working ON my business, not in my business. This realization led to many positive and long standing changes in many areas of the Guinco work place, all of which are still enforced today.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Guinco Service – what should we know?
Guinco Service is an in-home appliance repair company who serviced all brands of appliances back in the early days, A few years back, we were chosen to become a certified servicer for Whirlpool, which allowed us to receive highly specialized training for the entire Whirlpool family of products. This entitled us to superior training and resources for the Whirlpool brand of products. Based on the volume of calls we were receiving, it made sense to specialize in one brand. Once we realized we were becoming more efficient in these brands due to all the superior classes and training, it was just the right call to make for our customers. We are one of the few companies in the country that specialize in one brand. It is a big leap to take, but we’ve never looked back. We have also been blessed in our support and technical staff. Guinco is one big family and we do our best to share our family values with our customers.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My wife, Toni, has been here from day one. Our skill sets were quite different which it allowed us to stand shoulder to shoulder and take on the daily tasks together and grow our company together. The national peer group I joined several years ago consisted of industry leaders who shared their knowledge and skills, and were always there to lend a hand when needed. I have been very fortunate to have very dedicated and knowledgeable employees, who continue to amaze me on a daily basis. As the years have gone by and our family has grown, my eldest son, Jared, now stands beside me and basically runs the day to day operations. I could not be prouder.
