Today we’d like to introduce you to Eva Geczy.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Eva. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and adopted in Russia and moved to the states at three and a half years old. I have a brother who was also adopted with me. Being so close in age, I jokingly called him my twin for the longest time. Both of my parents were in the military, so we moved a few times, but are now settled in Texas. It’s been a privilege to have an art enthusiast family. As my grandmother is a painter, I grew up being inspired by her practices. Both of my parents are also engaged in the art world as collectors and travelers.
On my own, I always dabbled in painting, but throughout my school years, for the most part, I thought I was going to be a musician. I became serious about painting when I took a gap year after high school. That year gave me a moment to take a breather, find myself: an artist! Traveling and experiencing fine art for a year, opened a door that inspired me to pursue painting. To that end, I earned my associate of arts degree in 2020 from Richland College here in Dallas. This fall, I will be transferring to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where I will further my endeavors.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have gone through a few bumps along the way. As a start, I moved to the states at a young age, so adapting quickly to change was vital. Learning the English language was a struggle for me. Art was a tool for me in learning the language and communication. These past few years have been a true struggle as I have been encased with the effects of the addiction and recovery of a person with whom I am closely connected with. This has been a long road, but I have been accepting the process. My art has helped me process the chaos that this addiction has thrown into my life. The process of engaging a mental fix and being content with self is also expressed in my work.
We’d love to hear more about your art.
I work both in abstract and figurative painting. What drives my art is an exploration of and experimentation with abstract ideas involving emotion, energy, kinetics, and sound. I became interested in doing this particular genre of art because it allows me to take the abstract ideas from deep within me and express them to the world in concrete form. The convergence of me and the blank canvas or platform makes the art and process one. Bringing a concept or concern from the abstract and conveying it in a concrete form while allowing for the audience to utilize their own thoughts, words, and emotions to connect with the work of art is difficult. The process requires a great amount of contemplation of the self and the world. In my work, I contemplate nonsense in reality and reality in nonsense. My work lives at the intersection of distortion and realism. I experiment with the abstract in contrast to reality. I am excited to step into the emerging genre called Disrupted Realism.
