Today we’d like to introduce you to Adriana Amaya.
Adriana, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a little girl my dream was to be on the radio, and before I knew it that dream came true and took to me to be a voice within my own community. Three key ingredients to make dreams come true in my life have been Faith, Family and Perseverance. Faith in God and in His purpose for me to fulfill and bless others with the talents I possess. My family has always been a place in which I find comfort and strength to keep on in my journey. I am grateful to my husband and parents for always advising and supporting me in following my dreams. Perseverance is more than a word in my life. It’s a mark that has set many goals to become realities within me.
In 2007, after graduating from Grand Prairie High School I enrolled in American Broadcasting School where I learned skills and techniques to join the radio world. Multicultural Radio Broadcasting Inc. hired me in 2008 as their Traffic Director and Midday On-Air Personality for 540 AM La Poderosa. (Yary Sydney and Ted Sauceman, I appreciate the opportunity) A year later, in 2009, I was laid off due to the recession, just a month later I was hired at CBS Radio Dallas where I joined MEGA 107.5FM team and became a solid player within the organization. I played many roles from promotions, production, on-air, clerical and public affairs. In 2011, I started the First Spanish Christian Show in a non-christian radio named “Musica Del Cielo Con Adriana” the show was full of inspiration, hope and faith for all who listened. My heart rejoiced every Sunday morning while playing all those inspirational songs and giving out words of hope to all my listeners.
In 2012, Mega 107.5FM won The Marconi Awards for The Spanish Station of the year, while I was part of their team. For six years, I served as their Public Affairs Director meeting with other directors from the Dallas Metropolitan area to see what were the main issues to address within our great DFW Metroplex, connecting numerous services and non-profits with our listeners. My last position within CBS Radio Dallas was Facilities Manager, in which I worked with management, giving me a deeper look into how radio functions. I am truly thankful to Mr. Brian Purdy, Cindy Alford, Pio Ferro and Jimmy Gonzalez for believing in me.
In 2015, I was laid off and this time, I felt completely broken because I felt my dream had banished, but little did I know that this was going to be one of the biggest blessings in my life. While searching for a job, I encountered the need for Higher Education, and I joined Mountain View Community College and finished my Associate within a year. Making the transition between community college and the university was going to take a huge leap of faith and there I saw a great blessing when I became a recipient of the Terry Foundation, who paid my tuition and sponsored my education graduating in May 2019 from the University of Texas at Arlington with a BA in Political Science and minor in Spanish. During my time in College, I was blessed to study abroad in Austria, Germany, Chile and Argentina.
In the summer of 2019, I was rehired with Multicultural Radio Broadcasting Inc. as their Office Manager and Public Affairs Director for both of their stations in the Dallas Market, 540 AM and 1360 AM. I currently produce and host “Tu Comunidad con Adriana” a community center radio show airing every Saturday at 12:30 pm on 540AM and 1360AM. I delight very much in helping my community in every need I see they have.
The journey continues and let me say that it has not been easy. As a full-time mom, wife, worker and also attending graduate classes towards my master’s in public administration has been a big challenge, but I don’t give up because I know that through my work, many will be blessed.
Throughout my life, I have volunteered at numerous organizations such as my local church, The American Heart Association, The North Texas Food Bank, DISD, GPISD, among many others. I believe that in order to produce change outside, change has to start within. Serving others is an important way to connect with the needs of others and will always keep your feet on the ground.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a rocky road, especially while having to be a working mom. Leaving me with sleepless nights. My family goes first and that implies that I do my mom’s duties prior leaving to be a worker or a student. Balancing priorities is a major component to be successful, so at the end, you reach your goals, but you don’t lose the important people in your life. My husband has played a vital role in motivating, supporting and helping me in every way possible.
In the summer of 2018, I discovered that I was borderline with leukemia. My husband was there to support me. I never gave up because I knew God had not finished working through me to bless others and I hold on to those dreams. I thankfully got out of that stage, and I enjoy life even more today.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Multicultural Radio Broadcasting story. Tell us more about your work.
Multicultural Radio Broadcasting Inc. specializes in selling air time to minorities. We currently have Spanish, English and Chinese programming. Both of our stations 540 AM and 1360 AM here in the Dallas/FW area are focused on giving the opportunity to many churches, businesses and individuals to have their own radio show at a low cost.
We set ourselves apart from others within the business because we have been consistent in our mission for more than 15 years serving our community. I am very proud of my radio show “Tu Comunidad con Adriana” because it brings knowledge and it connects the community with goods and services such as health services, immigration services, food pantries and much more week after week.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I have not been lucky; I have been blessed and I have also worked hard towards every single one of my goals. Every time I see an opportunity, I measure how much it will cost me to reach it and if I see it is attainable, I take the chance towards it.
In the near future I want to run for local office within my community. As I mentioned before, the involvement in our community is important to see positive change happen.
