Meet Trinetta Powell of Reveal and Restore Counseling in McKinney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trinetta Powell.

Trinetta, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am originally from Mobile, AL, affectionately known as the Port City and home of Mardi Gras. Yes, before any of my New Orleans peeps say anything look it up, lol. As a kid, I always knew I wanted a career where I could help others. I had a great example of what it was like to think beyond yourself being raised by my mother. Education was an expectation growing up. I went to college with the intention that I would become a nurse. However, God had a different plan for me. While in my nursing program, I discovered that I found more fulfillment in talking with the patients and their families to provide comfort and support emotionally. So in my junior year of college, I changed my major to Sociology, with plans to attend graduate school for a degree in Counseling. Some of my family members didn’t understand why I would change from a career path that would be secure and paid well. Despite their uncertainty, I knew I was making the best choice for me.

I graduated with my Master of Science Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, and later became a Licensed Professional Counselor. My husband, two boys and I moved to Texas in 2010 in the midst of the recession with the hope of a better future for our family. Texas was definitely different from Alabama, lol. Once we found a community, we think it is a good fit for us. After working for different treatment facilities and agencies, I felt ready to take a leap of faith. and begin the transition of working for myself. I opened my private practice Reveal and Restore Counseling, PLLC, in February 2020. My practice is focused on helping teens, adults, and couples cope with the stressors of life, find balance in their increasingly growing task list, and manage their roller coaster of emotions.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road has never been easy for me. Listen, I survived grad school during a high-risk pregnancy, getting married, major deaths in my family, living through Hurricane Katrina, and moving out of state with no extended family support. I have had to deal with naysayers, people who said they would help but didn’t, and a HUGE learning curve in starting a business. I am a Christian and I can say my faith is what got me through; I am definitely resilient. All of the obstacles were meant to be a part of my journey to shape who I am today. My life experiences are the secret sauce that makes my clients feel safe when they come to my office. Most of my clients say they feel like they are talking to a friend or family member during our sessions. They know I am not perfect. I have experienced pain, loss, and difficulties and have come through it stronger. It is my goal to be truthful with my clients and explain that things will be uncomfortable before they get better, and I am here to give them the strategies to get better.

We’d love to hear more about your practice.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor who provides mental health therapy. At Reveal and Restore Counseling, PLLC, we provide individual and couple’s counseling to teens, adults, and couples. I guide my clients in discovering quick solutions to find balance, develop coping skills, build healthy relationships, and gain clarity. What I am proud of as a company is that it is existing and thriving. I am proud that when I felt doubtful and feared failure, that I pushed ahead, relied on my faith, and didn’t quit. I decided to open my business in February 2020, just before the pandemic started. Despite all of the obstacles that the pandemic has brought, I have been able to continue to provide quality service to my clients. It is my commitment to see things through, and not give up when things are tough is what I think sets Reveal and Restore Counseling apart. As a Clinician, I will go the distance with my clients.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
North Dallas is a good place for my practice. Black people are becoming more and more open to seeking therapy, and finding a Black Therapist can be challenging depending on where you are located. I would definitely recommend other Black Therapists to start a practice in this area as there is a shortage in our representation among our colleagues.
