Today we’d like to introduce you to Marvin Arts Jr.
Marvin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my resume writing business in 2012, after receiving my Master’s degree in Human Resources because of the challenges that I faced during my job search. I was having a hard time breaking into the HR field and come to find out I had a horrible resume. I had an acquaintance I knew from an HR organization take a look at my resume, and she told me that my resume was the problem. We worked together on fixing it, and at that point, I knew I wanted to be a resume writer.
I connected with others who were already in the resume writing industry so they could guide me on how to launch a resume writing business. I started off doing resumes for free for friends and family, and when I started to get positive feedback and saw the product was producing results, then I knew it was time to move into charging for my services. Since 2012, I have evolved into a business that offers interview prep, career coaching, LinkedIn profile enhancement, and I also provide job search webinar trainings.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I am still working in the HR field and have been since I started my business. I work my 8 to 5 and then come home in the evening to work with clients. I work with clients on the weekends as well because many of them have jobs, so I want to make sure that I accommodate their schedules as well.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I started only writing resumes in the beginning, so I guess you can say I specialize in resume writing. However, I have evolved into a business that provides job search assistance services. I do one on one career coaching and interview prep, and LinkedIn profile enhancements and creation. I also offer job search training courses and webinars that allow my clients to learn on their own about how to market themselves and current job market trends. I am proud that I can have such a significant impact on my clients’ lives. It makes my day when a client comes back to me and says the resume or coaching I provided them helped land them a job or get them a promotion. I view my work with my clients as a partnership. I don’t treat them as a number or make this a one-sided relationship. I want them to trust me because, at the end of the day, they are going to be the ones sitting in the interview and not me.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t necessarily believe in luck, but I can say I have caught some breaks. During my job search, I was fortunate to find an entry-level HR role that helped propel me to where I am at today. That role allowed me to learn about recruitment and help me build on skills as a resume writing and learn about the job market.
