Meet Dr. Sam Raza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Sam Raza.

Dr. Raza, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a Cardiologist here in Dallas and I am a wife and mother to two toddlers. I love being a Cardiologist. I am originally from London, born and raised. I graduated from medical school from the prestigious Imperial College London and had my medical school graduation at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Medical school was a wonderful experience. I have been fascinated by cardiac physiology for a long time, which started very early on in medical school. I love learning, especially about the human body and the heart. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to train in some of the world’s best institutions and I have been humbled by my experiences.

After graduating from medical school in London, I made the decision to move my career to the United States. Ten years later, this was the best decision I ever made. I completed my residency at the University of Vermont, where I served in a leadership role as a Chief Resident. As Chief, I mentored and led our residency program and advised doctors in training. I was the bridge between the senior doctors in leadership and the trainee doctors.

Further, in my career, I was excited to move to Texas, where I completed my fellowship in Cardiology and became a board-certified Cardiology. My Cardiology fellowship experience was grueling but with fierce mentorship and unforgettable patient experiences, which have taught me so much, I was shaped into the Cardiologist that I am today. Taking care of people’s hearts is my passion. I met my husband and had two children along the way during my training.

I am now dedicated to serving my patients and I practice as a Clinical Cardiologist with a focus on advanced cardiac imaging and prevention of heart disease. I focus on wellness and a healthy heart lifestyle. I have also become an advocate on social media, where I post about Cardiology topics relevant to heart health and lifestyle. With my patients, I focus on the use of cardiac imaging in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease with a special interest in Preventive Cardiology, diet and Wellness. I come from a medical family. My parents are both physicians in London along with my two younger sisters, who are doctors working in London. My sister is completing her training to become a Cardiologist in London.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The path to success is never smooth. You have to be intentional and follow your dreams. In becoming a Cardiologist, I pursued my lifelong dreams. I followed my passions for advanced cardiac imaging, which is a craft that I honed with several years of dedication and lots of time commitment. I took risks and I was bold. I hope to empower others, especially women and I hope to be a role model for my sisters and for my daughter. I want to show my daughter, that she can be anything that she wants to be in life.

There are many obstacles in medicine and especially in Cardiology, the stakes are high and we made life or death decisions, which can be challenging. We also face death and encounter difficult situations such as the end of life decisions.

We’d love to hear more about your practice.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
It takes a village. I have been supported first and foremost by my family. My parents who served as role models in medicine with interesting dinner table conversations. My husband, Dr. Sadi Raza, has been incredibly supportive of my career and a huge #HeForShe. He is my rock.

To my mentors in Cardiology, especially to the leaders in the field who have shaped me into the Cardiologist that I am today. Thank you to the unwavering support of these amazing individuals who have been there for me during my journey. From clinical pearls to long hours spent looking at images of hearts in the echocardiography lab- I am deeply grateful for the teaching and mentorship during my fellowship training. Finally, to my patients who have shared their lives and who have taught me so much. I remember each and everyone and I carry what you have taught me to take care of every person that I see.
