Today we’d like to introduce you to Micaela Dartson.
Micaela, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started writing short articles and poems in 7th grade for a publication at St. Peter’s Academy titled “The Crusader.” I also had a love for science and attended the High School for Health Professions and then majored in Biology Pre-Medicine at the Xavier University of Louisiana. My love for writing never left me. I had planned to double major in English and Biology but the science labs were conflicting with the English courses I needed to double major.
Flash forward to my residency in Detroit, I was compelled to write and started writing a book that I never completed but I have three published books to date. I decided to take my desire for writing to a new level and learned the art of screenwriting. I’ve written more than 20 features (one placed in the Austin Film Festival semifinals) and a few shorts. From there, I decided to produce my own work and formed my company, Two Chix Flix. My first film was a psycho thriller titled “Monkey Brains.” I’’m currently producing various film and TV projects and I am a podcaster as well, “Purgatory With Dr. Micaela.” I currently have the pleasure of serving as President of Ladies in Film and Television and have served on the executive board of Women in Film Dallas.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The only struggle has been getting out of my own head. Nothing is impossible if you try.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a physician by trade and I produce films and I’m a screenwriter. I’m most proud to have produced projects with awesome people period. What sets me apart from others is that I successfully use both sides of my brain.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wouldn’t do a thing differently. I’ve made mistakes but they have been character and business builders. I wouldn’t be where I am if I’d had nothing to learn from.
