Meet Jake Aube

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Aube.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jake. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My journey in photography started when I was a sophomore in college. My major was architecture, so we were encouraged to take photos of the area our design project was located for the semester. From then on, I started to enjoy the photo-taking part to the point where I started going out with my phone on my free time. A year into it, I got my first camera. It started out as a hobby and didn’t think much of it as I was pursuing a degree in Architecture. As the hobby grew, I became more passionate for it and I realized I could make something out of it. The majority of my photography knowledge is all self-taught. Besides watching the basic YouTube tutorials.

The big advance in photography was this March, the world shut down. Most took this time to relax (which is fine). But I told myself that this is my opportunity to make a dream become a reality. I told myself that I’m not going to try and get better at what I currently do, but learn something new so that I can separate myself from the rest. I taught myself how to take my still photos and turn them into 2.5D animations (I call them 3D photos).

Also, during quarantine, I got on TikTok. This has helped me grow my platform to numbers in a short period of time that I didn’t think was possible. I started posting on the app in the beginning of April and in just four months, been able to grow my platform to 20,000 followers on Tiktok and nearly double my Instagram following in the process. During this, I realized that I need to start teaching other photographers who are just starting out and hope to inspire them to keep doing what they are doing cause it will all work out soon.

I’ve realized that a lot of people look up to me and want to be like me one day, so I realized that its time to start inspiring people to pursue their dreams. My goal is to provide knowledge on the art of photography/videography or everything in between, but also to continue to hear people admire my work and hope that one day they get to where I am today.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For the most part is has been really smooth so far. The only struggle was time. Architecture school is very demanding and took away a lot of free time to go out and take photos. Now that I have been finished with school for a little over a year now, I have has a lot more free time to continue what I’m doing and also learn new creative things within the photography field.

This has taught me that patience is key in anything if you want to be successful. Understand when it is your time to move forward.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I don’t have an official business, it is currently freelancing, but the photography that I enjoy, and want to specialize in is working with brands or personal branding. Hearing brand stories and visions always inspire me to be creative. What sets me apart from others is that my goal every time I take out my camera is how I can be different. There’s a lot of photographers out there, so taking the time to research what they are all doing and figuring out how I can achieve the same thing differently is what separates me from the others.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would learn the craft sooner rather than just point and shoot. I get so invested in the art of the photo, spending time researching new areas to take photos.

When I was starting out, I always compared myself to others. I always looked at the pros and wanted to be like them. I didn’t realize until later that everyone is unique. So if I were able to start over, I would try and be different from the start. The idea of being different is what separates me from the rest.
