Meet Kevin Magee of KL Photography in Lewisville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Magee.

Kevin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I always enjoyed taking pictures growing up. Whether it was on a cell phone or camera. I was the guy that would lay on the ground to catch the perfect angle when someone asked me to take a picture of them. In 2019, the first photoshoot I did was for my fiancee’s graduation. From that point on I would take pictures here and there but nothing professionally.

At the time the pandemic began, I was working as a Manager at American Airlines at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. In April, I took my scheduled two-week vacation from work. Being that COVID was in full swing, we couldn’t travel out of the country like I normally would. Knowing the travel industry would be hit hard by COVID, I prepared myself for the worst, which was possible layoffs in the near future. Everyday while I was on vacation for ten days, I began starting my photography business. I created my logo in Photoshop, created my website, created a business page on Facebook (KL Photography) and Instagram (@klance.photography) and business cards. Then for about a month, I would do photo shoots every other day of my fiancee (IG: @thatlightskinzeta) who indeed loves the camera. Also, every night for at least a month, I watched YouTube videos to perfect my craft and it has definitely paid off. On August 9, I finished filming my first film called “Mill Town.” It’s about my hometown of Bogalusa, LA. In June, I was presented with an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up and I was able to retire from American and now focus on photography full time.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So far, it has been a smooth road. The challenge at the beginning was the unknown of not knowing would I be successful and should I have kept my day job. After these last few months, I can say I made the right decision.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
My company is KL Photography. I’m a portrait/boudoir photographer and videographer. I specialize in both studio and outdoor photoshoots. I’m most proud at the way people feel after they finish a shoot with me. If it’s a couples shoot, the couple walks away from the shoot more in love then they began. If it’s boudoir, the client feels beautiful and sexy about themselves. I love people and making them feel good and as a photographer, making them look and feel beautiful is apart of my job.

Starting the first week of August, I will begin filming my first documentary about my hometown of Bogalusa, LA. This film will shed light on a rural community that was built by a paper plant and the civil rights movement but underneath that is a community with a rich, unique story. This film will be released this Fall.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My personality. I’m easy going and loves to just enjoy life. It’s an important part in my success because people like to feel comfortable when they do a photoshoot. My ability to ease that comfort plays a huge role in making my client bring out the best in their shoot.
