Meet Paul Bryant of Ocular Creative in Irving

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Bryant.

Paul, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing-up, art, particularly drawing and sketching, always came naturally to me. Growing up feeling misunderstood and living in a very rough part of the Dallas area, music and drawing has always been an escape for me. So when I discovered graphic design, it just seemed to be a natural progression for me to enter into that field of work.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been a very long and hard road. Like many men who grew up with a mostly absentee father, I got into all sorts of criminal activity at a young age and by the time I was twenty-seven, I was imprisoned and lost nine years of my life. Thankfully there were teachers and other people who saw something in me and poured wisdom and knowledge into my life. These people who believed in me helped to turn me around and see life with a new perspective.

What I wasn’t ready for was the fact that it’s much harder to gain employment with a criminal record and some jobs are just plain off-limits to you because of government regulation laws. So starting my own business seemed to be my only way out. Before prison, I didn’t even know graphic design existed. I didn’t realize you could receive any type of income with art. Learning that people would pay you for what you love to do was mind-blowing for me.

Ocular Creative – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company is Ocular Creative. It is a brand and identity design firm with a focus on fashion. I personally specialize in graphic and web design. Sometimes I have small projects I can handle on my own. But when there are larger projects, we bring in outsourced talent so things can continue to be done in a timely and professional manner.

We are proud of the work we do because our focus is not making money but serving the client. In the end, we want to solve any pain points or problems the client is dealing with. When someone thanks you with a genuine smile on their face, you know you’ve done your job right. What sets us apart is that we are not afraid to think completely outside of the box. We love being different and coming up with ideas and designs that no one has thought of before

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me, is living life on your own terms and not based on what society says success is. If I’m happy and at peace with myself, family, friends, loved ones and God. Then for me that’s a success. While I do want to live comfortably, I don’t want to do it at the expense of my integrity and peace of mind.
