Meet Nicholas Covington of Best Suited Mortgage in Bedford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Covington.

Nicholas, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I graduated from college in 2015 with two Business Degrees, 1 Minor, and 65k worth student loan debt. I quickly fell into sales in which I was shocked about the large amount of money that was to be made without the use of a degree. I started off in the Insurance industry, offering clients home, auto, and boat insurance and quickly became one the top producers. I really enjoyed being in sales because my pay was tied to my effort. What I didn’t enjoy was working for someone and having them dictate how I worked, when I worked, and how much I could make. After being fired from my first job over something out of my control, I made it a point to become my own boss ASAP. For me that goal was achieved in 5 years, where I am now the sole owner of an up and coming Mortgage Company and doing fairly well. Throughout those five years, I have learned what I enjoyed from a company and what I did not. I took each and every experience and used them as a platform to build the courage to become 100% independent.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Each and every sales role that I had, I pretty much cried to my mom when first starting. Sales is very tough and is definitely not for everyone. You must have some tough skin and really sift through all the no’s for that one, yes. My first role in sales, I passed through training with flying colors and was even training others by the time I was out on the floor, but I wasn’t making any sales myself. It was painful to see others that thanked you for the help, making more money than you. No ill will intended, but I just wanted to know when I was going to get my break. I would come home to my mom and just cry, go to sleep, and then try the next day again. Then something would just “click,” and the sales would roll in.

In order to maintain momentum, I put in countless late-night hours. If the office was closed at 6 pm I was there till 9 pm trying to take that last call. Most of my sales actually came in during these times. Being single, no kids, no pets, and little responsibilities while living with my mother, putting in 60-70 hours a week was normal for me. I continued this cycle for five years after college until I got burnt out working for others. The thick skin from the many no’s, the entrepreneur spirit from working late hours, and the buckets of tears helped mold me into the business owner I am today.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Best Suited Mortgage story. Tell us more about the business.
I am the proud owner of Best Suited Mortgage, LLC, which is a local mortgage broker company based out of DFW. I also own the moniker Best Suited Realty Group, brokered by Cityline Realty as an active Realtor specializing in New Build Construction. Figuring that the home process is stressful enough with all the parties involved, I wanted to offer a 2-in-1 experience to my clients and assist them with their mortgage home loan and locating their dream house. I think what sets me apart is honestly my brand, “Best Suited,”, which to me is extremely important to me. People see this 27-year-old young adult and jump to the conclusion that I am too young to help them with one of the largest transactions of their life, but for some reason, when I put on a nice suit, I get a free pass. Being the best suited/dressed gives me enough time to showcase that I am very knowledgeable in my field for my age. From there, my clients really do believe that I am the “Best Suited” to get the job done.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I would say my luck has been pretty neutral, which I am thankful for. Most positive things in my business career have been from hard work and my negative experiences have been from me learning and growing. I would probably equate me being fired from my first job out of college to be a bit of bad luck, but it ended up being the push I needed to start investing in myself and my future. I actually opened my own mortgage company two years sooner than I wanted and that was due to some bad luck of being let go from my previous mortgage company. I can honestly say it was due to just not being a good fit. But that bad luck turned into good luck as making the decision to open my own company was one of the best things to happen to my family and me.
