Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Rose.
Kristin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up, I always knew I wanted to “help” people but had no idea how to do that. Before entering college, I assumed I would either become a teacher or a therapist. I went to undergrad at Texas A&M and studied psychology. After undergrad, I moved to Kentucky and received my Master’s degree from the University of Louisville. I pursued my doctoral degree and training at a small private university in Louisville, KY, Spalding University. During my graduate training, I realized that I wanted to specialize in working with children, adolescents, and their families. I was matched to an APA approved Pre-doctoral internship in Rockville, Maryland, at a residential treatment facility. This was my first experience working full time as a psychologist and while it was exhausting, I loved it and knew I found the career for me.
Growing up in Texas, my husband and I knew we would eventually make our way back home. I was fortunate enough to find a Postdoctoral internship at a private practice in Colleyville, Texas. My supervisor Dr. Beth Lusby poured lots of time and energy in training me in neuropsychology to administer neuropsychological evaluations. I also experienced providing psychotherapy in the private practice setting. I remained at Dr. Lusby’s practice for ten years.
In May 2019, I decided that I was ready to branch out on my own and open my own practice, Rose Assessment and Therapy Center.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Providing psychotherapy is never easy. People are trusting you with their innermost thoughts and struggles. Often, these are not thoughts or feelings that they want to experience and that cause quite the amount of stress, sadness, anxiety, etc. Working with children and teenagers can have its challenges as most do not enter therapy when everything is “going well.” It is not uncommon for parents to want therapy… but their children can view therapy as a punishment or as an indicator that something is “wrong” with them. Therefore, I found that I invested a lot of time in connecting with my patients and acknowledging their struggles. Developing a therapeutic relationship and helping my patients understand themselves (thoughts and feelings) is really where the learning and change occur. The use of interventions or tools became the “easy” part of my work with people.
Another struggle I experienced was leaving the private practice that I called “home” for ten years. While I knew that I wanted to start a practice, I also had a fear of failing. I had to utilize the same interventions that I teach my patients. I decided to hone my fear into action and opened my practice in May 2019.
Please tell us about Rose Assessment & Therapy Center.
I am a licensed psychologist in the State of Texas who specializes in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and has trained in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). I provide individual psychotherapy to children, adolescents, and young adults. I also provide family therapy services. In addition, I am certified to treat Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors such as trichotillomania. I have been licensed in the state of Texas since 2010.
However, I know that therapy is not a “one size fits all” approach. I am able to connect and adjust to individual needs through different theoretical orientations and modalities (attachment, interpersonal theory). In addition to psychotherapy, I provide neuropsychological evaluations.
I am most proud of the connections and progress that my patients make. Rose Assessment & Therapy Center strives to create a “safe” environment for individuals to explore their thoughts and feelings in a meaningful way… that also leads to change. What sets me apart is my ability to connect with patients. I follow scientifically supported approaches to therapy that ultimately lead to lasting changes in people’s lives.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I might have started my own practice sooner. However, I believe that everything happens for a reason and that I learn along the way. Being part of practice (rather than owning one) freed up space for me to start my own family and really learn the ins and outs of a successful psychologist and private practice.
