Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Quanita Crable.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Crable. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
To say, “I come from humble beginnings!” is so cliche but true. I was born in Pittsburgh, PA to a young working mother who had dropped out of high school. I lived in a house with my mother, my grandmother, my older brother and my uncle. As an adult, I realize that we were poor, but as a young girl, I would have never believed it. When I was eight years old, my mother married my stepfather, who was in the Airforce. He was also from Pittsburgh and they knew each other as young children. He was stationed in Wichita, KS at McConnell AFB, so we packed up and moved to Kansas (what a culture shock!). This is not her story, but my mother went back to school and now has 4 Master’s Degrees. That is so relevant to my story because my mother helped shape me into the hard-working woman that I am today. She set the example for discipline and determination.
I graduated from Derby High School outside of Wichita, KS and went on to the University of Kansas for undergraduate school. I got a B.A. in chemistry after 4.5 years and then went on the medical school there also. After four years of medical school, I entered an Ob/Gyn residency, and to say that was a shocker would be an understatement. My grandmother died from a heart attack when I was 16 and from that moment on, I vowed to be a cardiologist. God said otherwise. I finished my residency in 2011 and was lead to Dallas to start my career. I joined a practice that did not match my virtues and values. This leads me to start my own practice in 2012. I’ve grown from seeing 1-2 patients per week to seeing 100+ per week. I love what I do, and I don’t feel like its a job. I never imaged I be in the position that I am in, but ever since I was born, I dreamed of becoming a doctor. I am able to influence and affect 1000’s of women’s lives and it is a humbling opportunity. I practice Obstetrics and Gynecology, but I am passionate about minimally invasive surgery using the DaVinci robot. I’ve been told that I am one of the best robotic surgeons in the country. I’m not 100 percent sure if that is true, I just know that I love being able to change women’s lives through robotic surgery. Many of my patients have fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, etc., and I am able to help them using a procedure that allows them to resume normal life quickly. I am blessed to be able to do what I do.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As Carnegie stated, “Anything in life worth having is worth working for.” It certainly has not been an easy road, but I believe that God had my life predestined to succeed. When I was in college, I wanted to be in the premed program. The premed advisor told me that it was too hard of a path and that I should consider another career. He sent me to a different counselor who also told me to reconsider. This made me more determined to succeed. I worked hard to get considered for opportunities that others barely had to apply for, and I was passed up numerous times. When I was about to finish my residency, I had a job lined up.
A few days before I finished, the doctor who was going to hire me decided that he did not want a partner and backed out. I was now jobless and worried about what I was going to do. When I finally found a position, it was with a doctor who’s morals and values did not match with mine. That lead me to start my own practice. I started my own practice with little mentorship and/or financial assistance. I stepped out on faith and God filled in the gaps. I currently do some of the most difficult robotic surgeries in the nation, but there are times when physicians with less experience are asked to represent the robotic community over me. Despite all of these things, I continue to work hard to serve a greater purpose, and care for the women of DFW.
We’d love to hear more about your practice.
My main business is Ob/Gyn. I specialize in DaVinci robotic surgery. I am known for treating women with large uterine fibroids (uterine tumors) and severe endometriosis using a minimally invasive approach. This helps women get back to their busy lives very quickly. I am most proud of my business partner. God has always been my number one business partner, and I believe that my faith sets me apart from others. I also believe that my connection with my patients sets me apart. I have a very diverse practice and that is what keeps me grounded. I absolutely love my patients and I take pride in providing the best care that I can. I also love doing mission work. For the last four years, I’ve been involved with an organization call Faith in Practice. We go to Guatemala (2nd poorest nation in the world) to provide medical/surgical and faith-based services to the people of Guatemala. I am very passionate about missions and giving back opportunities that were given to me. I love mentoring young girls and have been involved with several organizations that have given me the opportunity to mentor.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I am proud of my journey thus far, and although it was not easy, the difficult times are what made me who I am today. I am thankful for all of the opportunities to learn and grow through the obstacles.
