Meet Amelia Douse of Dark Phoenix Radio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amelia Douse.

Amelia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I always laugh whenever people ask me this question. I have always been mesmerized by entrepreneurship. My passion and my art is and always has been food. Honestly, it was simply turning ideas and dreams into a reality. Last year I was presented with a business opportunity in the hospitality industry. I invested my money along with several other like-minded individuals. Long story short, bad business was conducted and we lost our money and everything we had. We all remained close and would frequently talk about the businesses that we wanted to have. Everybody had something different, but time had taught us all that it was too much for a single person to manage. My partners and I (Monet Ross, Jessica Donato, Brock Anderson & Ramel Douse) each had a business plan and we actually launched through our umbrella company DouRouSon LLC.

We actually have a Logistics Company (DouLogistics), Brokerage company (Ross & Associates), Heavy Equipment Rentals (Anderson Equipment Rentals), Catering company (DouDining), who also teamed up with Queenz Catering (Owned by Valarie Brass) to launch The Q& A Culinary Series. Lastly, there is Dark Phoenix Radio. I tell everybody… I never wanted this, but its mine now and I am rocking it! I mean, I love music, but I never in a million years thought I would be owning, let alone running a radio station. I have dabbled in a few different industries over the years, but I will admit I was in over my head when I first started. Now I am just up to my ears! Douglas Elliott of Next Level Internet Radio and Dean Manuscript of Tricoastal Radio really stepped in and helped me out a lot.

From equipment selection to setup to programs, the entire 9. I won’t lie and say I wasn’t kind of skeptical. They have their own successful stations and they are thriving and here I am, the new fish in the sea. I was taken aback that they stopped swimming to help lil ole me. You have to be honest. There are a lot of cut-throat and greedy people out here will try to rip you to shreds. Fortunate for me, that is not the energy I was met with and I am thankful. I am truly excited about our newest project, as well. We have attained our own Roku Channel called THE PLUG COLLECTIVE. We launch on September 15, 2020. I am coming undone, just thinking about it. THE PLUG COLLECTIVE consists of Johnnie Judah of Spin Doctors Entertainment, DJ Dogstyle, Beatnurd Hub, Neo Gold Entertainment, MIL Productions, The Royal Experience, Queenz Catering, MIL Productions, Next Level Internet Radio, KMWi-Media, Tricoastal Radio and Dark Phoenix Radio. We are creating a movement that is going to take the world by storm! I am truly looking forward to all of the strides we are making.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Absolutely not. I have lost friends and family along the way. I think it comes with the territory. I have found my circle getting smaller, and honestly, I prefer it that way. There’s this preconception that when you start a business, your friends and family are going to be there to support you and help you. It turns out that is one of the greatest lies ever told. I have learned to do what is best for my business. I have never truly been popular anyway so it doesn’t really phase me much. I advise anyone going into business, especially people of color, to LEARN FINANCIAL LITERACY. That is the number 1 cause of failure. There was a lot I was not taught growing up. Even in school, there never taught the foundations for building your own business. They prepare us to be employees, NOT employers. Lack of knowledge causes you to remain stagnant and not excel.

There are levels to this, but without the proper foundation and knowledge, you will not make it to the top. I have bumped my head a few times, but I know I have it right this time. I always used to think that failing was a bad thing. I had to learn that I kept having to start over because there was something I was supposed to get (learn) that I missed. Not that it became repetitive, but if you have ever seen the movie Groundhog day, then you’re catching what I am throwing. Starting, let alone maintaining a business isn’t easy. The hardest but greatest lesson I had to learn is that everybody isn’t meant to take this journey with me. I had to drop dead weight. It hurt, but it was the right choice. It isn’t for everybody…it was for ME. I’m going places but I don’t have any baggage, and I love to travel that way.

Dark Phoenix Radio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Dark Phoenix Radio was founded by a coterie of friends determined to leave their marks on the airwaves. We provide a platform for local artists, podcasters, business owners and brand ambassadors as well. We open our doors to dreamers in hopes of turning their dreams into a reality. We have three studios to choose from and each one has their own vibe as well. I am most proud of the atmosphere that we have created here at Dark Phoenix. We are very family-oriented. Everyone that comes on board with us is considered family. I love the love that I received when Dark Phoenix was created. Every 2nd Saturday of the month, we have a Bounce Brunch. Brunch is the bait, but we reel in sharks!

The bounce brunch is the opportunity to tour our facility (we even have an event center), meet the hosts of the shows we have here and bounce your ideas off of other podcasters/broadcasters. We have RJ Prince, Stu Akers, Jaccarri Cameron, DJ Dogstyle, High Noon, Raw Truth and a few more personalities here as well. Ingenuity is never compromised and its a phenomenal platform. We even open the floor to small business owners wanting to promote their businesses. MIL Productions hosts an Open Mic Night every 3rd Friday of the month and they are lit! We are starting our business networking nights in November, so make sure you look out for that. Trust me when I say you want to take part. There are so many great things taking place here.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
By definition, success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. Success to ME is achieving my desired vision and executing every goal on my list. I want to attain so much more than wealth or fame. My success will be achieved once my legacy is SECURED for my children. I know that nothing in this world is easy. I have grown so much over the years. Success has been taking the path of least resistance. I have opened myself up to new challenges that have resulted in my growth spiritually, mentally and professionally as well. I have had to learn to not only change the way I speak but the way I think as well. Almost everyone that meet gets that added shock value. I come with a disclaimer (honestly). Learning the difference between a want and a need is essential to me. One needs to maintain balance. You will learn that sometimes it is okay to say “NO.” You cannot allow fear to hold you back. I have learned that I will definitely lose a few battles, but those losses can also help you win the war IF you learn from them. It may seem like a lot, but I apply these principles everyday and I see the difference it makes.
