Meet Sequoise Givens of Above Average Health and House Calls in Dallas Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sequoise Givens.

Sequoise, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hello, my name is Sequoise Givens and I am a nurse practitioner. I have been in the medical field most of my life. I started at the age of seven when I became the primary caregiver for my mother that was paralyzed from the neck down following a car accident. That is how I developed my love of nursing. I worked my way from LVN to AGNP all while being a single mom and still caring for my paralyzed mother.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have had more struggles then I can recall besides having to basically grow up at the age of seven. I survived an abusive marriage, which left me with a child to raise on my own. I survived not 1 but 2 house fires that left me with nothing but the clothes on my back.

The second house fire was the hardest because my disabled mother’s sisters tricked her into signing the money over to them while my sister and I (and our children) went homeless ($500,000+). I wrote a book about the struggles I was having as a black nurse facing racism and ignorance in the workplace. I have had to fight for the rights of my patients at certain jobs and I have seen it first hand following a fall down a flight of stairs, which left me with serious back issues that I was refused treatment for because I was told I was drug-seeking.

Please tell us about Above Average Health and House Call.
Above Average Health and HouseCalls is a company that I created because I saw a need for above-average healthcare for people in and around my community. I specialize in geriatrics, healthcare, weight-loss, IV hydration, and diseases/medications that affect my community.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in a two-parent household but I spent most of my time taking care of the house. I was a straight-A student up until high school. I had a smart mouth, which often got me into trouble. I remember many trips to the principles office (in Jr high school, the principal had me to sign his board). But I ALWAYS respected my elders to this day. I still use yes sir and yes ma’am with them, even my patients.
