Today we’d like to introduce you to Lydia Turner.
Lydia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was severely overweight all my life up until my college years. During my sophomore year, my ex-boyfriend passed away and the gym became my solitude during that difficult time. The gym started as an escape for me and ended up being a place in which my career would emerge. I fell deeply in love with fitness and the anatomy of the body. Lifting weights is my favorite hobby. I got my degree in kinesiology, got three different certifications, and also became a doctor of physical therapy student. I decided to start my brand Beautifully Bodied once I figured out my role in the fitness world and I then accomplished my goal of owning a business. I have trained clients all over the DFW metroplex, including in corporate settings. I have worked as a strength and conditioning coach for collegiate sports teams. And I have taught group exercise classes, including dance classes to over 200 people at one time. Educating others on how to take care of their bodies instantly became my purpose and I truly love what I do.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest struggle in all phases in life has always been believing in myself and forgetting my own value. When I was trying to lose weight or even with building my fitness brand there were times where I had to remind myself of the mission and encourage myself to believe in my efforts. I had to believe that my efforts would pay off if I kept up with it and stayed consistent. I reminded myself that I was valuable and important every step of the way, which wasn’t always easy. There were times I cried, got frustrated, and also temporarily had given up. Then, I would remind myself again and again of these things and it always got me through.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
My brand is called Beautifully Bodied. It encompasses beautiful, feminine women who enjoy lifting weights and putting in work in the gym. The brand emerged from the stereotype that since I wear things like makeup, nails, and earrings to workout, that somehow that affects my performance. It doesn’t. I am a triple certified personal trainer who loves to express my femininity and to lift like a badass and I am known for that. I specialize in weight loss, weight gain, bodybuilding, functional training, and strength and conditioning.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
After losing the weight, my proudest moment has been when I decided to pursue entrepreneurship in creating my own fitness brand. I was so intimidated by it and the fact that I faced my fear and conquered my biggest challenge made me extremely proud of myself. I truly believe we are capable of anything we set our minds to.
