Today we’d like to introduce you to Asheera.
Asheera, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story began in Birmingham, Alabama in single-parent households. My mom and aunt (Marisa Readus and Alisha Readus) were my key guardians and influencers. They are identical twins and they are the authors of “Breaking Thru The Bars, Where Does Peace Come In? Most of my childhood, I lived with my mom, aunt, my sister and my seven cousins. Growing up in a large family has shaped my personality so tremendously and I am forever grateful for the childhood I had. We moved to Texas In 2007, where my mom and aunt were lead to relocating for more opportunities and there were indeed plenty here in Dallas. I was raised by entrepreneurs and that alone was a seed that has taken root in my perspective. I have always loved music, art and nature; I am a poet and future author myself. I have always had a special place to sing.
I’ve been singing all of my life and official songwriting since I was ten. My little cousin and I would put on shows for the family of songs we had written. I’ve had the privilege to have a couple of musical influences enter my life and really encourage me to pursuit my crafts. Flash forward to 2018, I had gotten myself involved in a very toxic domestic violence relationship that was certainly a highlight of my life from the emotion it evoked. So creatively, it put me in position, I would sing for hours on end in the shower or in my alone time, releasing my soul’s agony. It was a pivotal year. I found my sound after literally losing myself and almost my mind. Now I am a photographer, singer/songwriter, poet and creative director. I created Wild Things Visual in 2019 as a place to exercise all aspects of my creativity. I am currently working on the rebranding of W.T.V, my poetry book, EP, and I have a single dropping this month. There is a lot on the way as I enter this new chapter!
Has it been a smooth road?
To be blunt with you, absolutely not. There has been some excruciating nights and dark places that really made me question why I was even alive. I have experienced homelessness, financial hardships and loss of friendships. The challenges faced with business involve setting boundaries, integrity and simple respect. I am developing a brand built on growth, individual expansion – the cultivation of the self. This journey has not been easy but as I grow, I genuinely appreciate each lesson I have been gifted. Through Gods grace, I have made it this far. I have committed myself to walk in my purpose and I accept the challenges that come my way because my ultimate goal is peace.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Wild Things Visual began as photography alone but has grown into a more project-based interconnected platform. This allows the production of behind the scenes projects, online series and magazine work. Here the focus is on creatives in their element and executing in a manner that presents the rawest form of the creation. I am a Creative Entrepreneur, which means there are no limits to how I may birth my expression. I work as a creative director, photographer, writer, and singer here I have hands-on placements with the creative process. In this company, I take the organic concept and breath an experience to life. “Creatives in Their Element” is the motto. If you have a creative project, there is a place, even for the wildest things.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I believe Dallas is a great place to begin in the creative world because of the connections that can be made simply by showing up. I love that about Dallas. It’s the follow that counts for most people lol. When it comes to people being willing to solidly support, it’s never who you expect. I’d recommend anyone with interest to starting up work in this city be optimistic, confident but discerning. I think the greatest place the scene could clean up is the idea that there is a spot to lose. There is nothing wrong with the friendly competition but it’s sad how often I see people worrying about what someone else is doing in the field they are playing in. I see it as everyone has a part to play so there’s room for everyone.
