Meet Teresa Searcy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Teresa Searcy.

Teresa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My name is Teresa and I was born in Dallas but raised in Grand Prairie, Texas. I have a Master’s degree in Education and a Masters of Science and currently working toward completing a counseling program that gears toward me obtaining my LPC. I have two beautiful daughters and four amazing grandchildren. Lastly, I am a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Incorporation! I actually got my start in photography back in my early 20’s by modeling for a few urban photographers in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex area. It wasn’t until 2011 when I decided that I didn’t want to be in front of the camera anymore because I felt like I was too short to model so it didn’t appeal to me. I love capturing memories so I decided to purchase a professional level camera and start my journey as a photographer. I started practicing by shooting my line sisters, family members and friends. I started reaching out to other photographers and asking if I could shadow them because I was hungry to learn as much as I could about photography. Doing all of this has brought me to where I am today.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
After working in Corporate America for many years, it got me to thinking about what I wanted my long term goals to be. Did I want to work for a company all my life or would I like to retire early and work for myself? So I tapped into what I love and that’s photography. The road has not been smooth. Lol!!!!! I never knew it would be so challenging. Photography isn’t just about picking the camera up and taking pictures… that’s the easy part. It’s the post-production that can be hard. Going through your images and trying to get them edited can be very stressful. Trying to get the best edit possible is important because it reflects your work. You want to provide the best possible image because they will bring more clients and if your clients are happy, they will definitely refer others to you. Secondly, let’s not talk about how expensive the equipment is! I never knew how expensive it would be to become a photographer until I bought my first camera and lens. Boy was I in for a surprise! I thought to myself, “Are you sure you want to do this?” Lol! I consulted with myself and decided that I was ready to take the dive.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
My company consists of a one-man show and I pride myself on quality work and good customer service. I currently specialize in general portraits and weddings. What sets me apart from others is that I’m a storyteller. I love telling stories through pictures.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I see my business leaning more toward fashion photography. I would love to be published in a fashion magazine one day. I’m currently working on a plan to start shooting more fashion. Fashion is currently not my strong suit because I tend to let it scare me off at times but I can’t allow it to defeat me. I’m ready to jump in and take control of what I really want to do. I have so many creative ideas in this brain of mine and I know I would be great at fashion photography,
