Today we’d like to introduce you to Ja’Shaelyn.
Ja’Shaelyn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been performing and singing since I could remember. In my own world, I’ve always been on stage. I am my maternal grandmother’s first grandchild and she always provided a stage for me to perform on. While she cooked, I’d sit on the kitchen floor, banging pots and pans, creating songs with her. My granny is not a singer, but she is creative. She would make garments that I’d model since I was a baby. Granny would get a camera, and I’d instantly be in a photo-shoot. My mother soon learned that I was talented and would always record me singing. I grew up acting and singing in stage plays and musicals throughout the city, which exposed me to more genres of music and classic artists.
In August of 2018, I stretched my range to Atlanta, GA, where I created and recorded my debut EP Triphecta. Triphecta was released in February of this year just before the pandemic started. It is composed of three singles: Forever and Sauces, produced by Kreative Villians in Atlanta, GA, and 808s, produced by The Institute in Dallas, TX. Now having limited opportunities to perform on live stages, as most artists would after releasing a new project, I’ve been enjoying the growth from virtually sharing this project with the world, piece by piece.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road, but it was nothing that I could not handle. You can call me a jewel because pressures, traumas, and struggles have built me to be who I am. I moved to Atlanta on a whim. I knew I wanted to explore beyond my home town in pursuit of bringing my dreams to life, but I literally had no plan. All I had was the intention. I moved to Atlanta without a car and a job. It was a hard adjustment in a city that I knew nothing about. However, I’ve always been very clear about what I want and where I wanted to go; the rest I had to leave to the universe to have my back.
January 1st of this year, I plainly said, f*** it. By all means just do it. I was willing to get a loan with a ridiculous interest rate to fund my EP. I just couldn’t go another day without giving the world what I’ve been called and purposed to do. I flipped nothing into something in three weeks while working a full time and part-time job. February 7, 2020, Triphecta was released and it’s been pleasurable since then! I made myself proud.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Triphecta is very liberating. I want listeners to feel empowered to honor themselves and be confident. Forever is about freedom; Sauces is a reminder of the power we individually have; and 808s is the force to be that power. It’s personal and I’m glad that so many can relate to Triphecta.
I started my company, Suxel Dynasty, in October of 2019. My sole goal was to have the business side of creating music and being an artist taken care of. In other words, this was a money move. I’ve invested many monies into this work, and I need to see the returns on my investments. The more research I did, the sharper my image appeared. Most people think I have a team behind me responsible for different duties, but it’s been me on my own. As of lately, I’ve entered the process of creating a team. Considering all I’ve accomplished on my own, I can only imagine how much better my career will be with a team of sharp and savvy individuals with me. “It’s going up” from here, and in the meantime, go stream and download Triphecta!
