Today we’d like to introduce you to Sha Lyons.
Sha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Charcoal is my bread and butter!! I’ve been drawing most of my life; I get that from my Dad. Since I was a kid, I can remember doodling in books and on scratch sheets of paper. Being an artist has always been a dream, whether or not I had the support behind me. My family never really took me seriously until I was able to actually show my full potential. I was introduced to charcoal while attending Texas A&M University-Commerce. One of the BEST art programs in Texas! The very minute the subtractive method was taught, I knew that this was going to be a new journey for me to take. So now, eight years later, I’ve started building a brand around it. Although being an artist is my dream, it’s not my only passion. After I’ve established myself as a true artist, I’d like to open an art gallery/ studio. I would want it to be for people who really don’t have any knowledge of the industry, or don’t have the people around them to help them get a fresh start as an artist. Give the people of the art community another environment to come, create, and not be judged of who they are or the genres of their works. Ultimately I want to work hard so that way I can make it a little easier for the young artist who will come after me.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of the many struggles for me is my social anxiety and depression. Artists are known to kind of put their all into what they’re doing; this includes emotions. Sometimes the motivation isn’t there. Sometimes I second guess myself on my designs before I even start them. As result, procrastination sets in and it’s hard to being yourself out of it.
We’d love to hear more about your art.
I am a charcoal artist! All of my pieces come professionally framed. I can also refurbish old frames and have them looking like new. What’s sets me apart from others is that I use the subtractive method on all of my pieces. This means that instead on drawing with charcoal, I draw with the eraser and erase my images into the charcoal. I can recognize highlights a lot better than shadows.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I had a pretty normal childhood. Was the youngest so I pretty much stayed to myself. Music was my best friend and a major influence in my art. I was a laid back kid, didn’t do or say too much.
