Meet Cindy Fleming of Cindy’s Woodworks in Kaufman County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Fleming.

Cindy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Ten years ago, I was going through some of my grandfather’s old stuff and found an old scroll saw and some of the things he had made with it. I decided then that these little toys and letters looked easy enough to cut out and surely I could do this too. So we hauled it home and set it up. After several failed attempts at getting things to work right and a dozen broken blades, I finally cut out a piece of wood that roughly resembled a chicken. I had been using the saw on and off for a few months when I came across a magazine about intarsia.

I was really impressed with how detailed these images were and I was determined to make one of these things. So I got this magazine and I run home and start laying out the shapes for a little Santa. Once it was cut, I put it all together and nothing fit together right, but I was happy enough with it that I knew I just needed a bit more practice and I would have it. Over the years, I did get progressively better and I started using different varieties wood, making my own patterns and expanding into different branches of woodworking. Now while scroll saw art is still what I love most, I also make signs, bowls, pens, and unique art pieces.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I started this journey while being a stay at home mom. Finding the time to go out and spend a little time on a new project is always a struggle. When both of the kids started school, I was able to spend more time in the shop and that is when I started my little business.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I create custom wood art pieces. I also turn pens, bowls and game calls. Create custom signs on the CNC machine. I specialize in custom intarsia art pieces. Intarsia is a mosaic art piece, where each piece is cut from a selected piece of wood, shaped and glued together to create a picture.

What were you like growing up?
I was a very shy little girl and spent a lot of time outside exploring. I have always loved walking around and observing nature. I would draw the flowers and birds I would find.
