Today we’d like to introduce you to Archana Iyer.
Archana, before we jump into specific questions about your art, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was always interested in Arts of various kind, be it Drawing, Painting, Dance, Theater, etc. Growing up, it was always my mother who encouraged me to participate in all form of extra curricular activities along with pursuing an academic career. I also had an inclination towards Science and soon, I completed my Bachelor’s in Engineering . I worked as a software developer with an MNC for couple of years until I realized that my true passion lies in creating art. Hence I decided to switch careers. After coming to the States, I pursued my 3d Animation degree, which helped me combine my Art and Technology skills. Now I am a part-time Freelance 3d Artist and a part-time Polymer Clay Artist.
My sculpting journey began when I accidentally discovered Polymer Clay in a craft store. I was intrigued that it could be baked in an oven. So I bought some home just to give it a try. I learnt a lot through the internet and soon got addicted to claying! I work mainly with Polymer Clay to create realistic food miniatures, figurines, jewelry and home décor. I enjoy sculpting but replicating real food into its mini form gives me immense joy and creative satisfaction. I am still learning new techniques everyday and hope to get better with time. I love sculpting. It helps me to destress and express my emotions.
Has it been a smooth road?
I will say quitting a stable, lucrative career to pursue my passion was definitely not an easy task. There were few ups and downs, which I have accepted and managed to overcome. This also wouldn’t be possible without the support of my parents, my in-laws and my partner. I firmly believe that life is a constant learning process and failures are a part of success.

Archana’s Creative Clay Creations was founded in 2013. I sell polymer clay creations such as food magnets, charms, jewelry and customized gifts. I specialize in creating realistic food miniatures. These are hand-sculpted tiny clay foods that look just like real food but will fit in the palm of your hands. They make unique one of a kind souvenirs and can be turned into magnets, charms, dollhouse foods and collectibles.
When I started in 2o13, there were loads of miniature non-Indian dishes being created with clay so I decided to experiment with some Indian delicacies. And with practice, along with miniature pizza, pancakes and cakes, I was also able to create miniature Indian food replicas such as Dosa, Idli Wada, Curries and Biryanis, etc. Currently, I am also into creating figurines, customized gifts like photo frames, mugs and hand-sculpted family portraits. I am glad I went back to creating art as it gives me immense joy and work satisfaction.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I definitely see a tremendous growth in the usage of polymer clay in various art forms. Based on the market research, polymer clay industry is expected to grow globally, mainly in the areas of toy markets and imitation jewelry. Polymer clay is versatile to use and can be easily baked at lower temperatures in your home oven. The creativity lies in the hands of the artist and the possibilities are endless!
