Today we’d like to introduce you to Ama Moore.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ama. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
At around the age of 12, I went through a traumatic event, which led me to self-harm. I’d rather not go into too much detail but that self-harm led to a lot of scars. From about 17-23, I used whatever foundation or make-up close to my skin color I could find to cover those scars. At the age of 24, I had an idea to start a cosmetics line, but I had no idea where to begin, I brainstormed names and even at one point thought about just going with “A.M.A Cosmetics.” I then, however, thought more about my middle name; it is Ghanaian and means “in the hands of God” thus, Mawusi Cosmetics was born.
Our company was made for women like me who have been through multiple obstacles but can still manage to smile in the face of adversity. Mawusi Cosmetics focuses on the uplifting of women through all walks of life and offers 100% vegan-friendly cruelty-free products. From 100% mink eyelashes to lip gloss body oils and more, we have a variety of products with multiple new ones becoming available every month. Mawusi Cosmetics focuses on diversity and inclusion above all and is LGBTQ friendly. It is my ultimate goal to one day become a household brand. So far, I’m still building my brand but I’ve had sales from all over, including Canada. My biggest inspiration is my kids because I know they’re watching me and helping me to succeed.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all, I’d like to say it has but boy has it been a bumpy one. When I first started out, I offered local delivery, so basically, you would place an order online and I would deliver your products on one of our designated delivery days. If that wasn’t a hassle, I’m not sure what was (lol). I had a blow out on one of my tires one time trying to deliver products. I decided that shipping was the best route to go and since then, the road has been a little smoother.
Mawusi Cosmetics – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business specializes in natural cosmetics safe for sensitive skin. We are most known for our various collections named after verses and/or people in the Bible. Our best seller is our “Adams Rib” lip gloss. I’m honestly just proud I didn’t give up as many times as I thought about doing so. I believe what sets me apart from others is that I hand make all of my products well except they eyelashes, but yes, everything else is 100% handmade.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment of my career so far was making over five sales in ONE MINUTE, and one of those sales being in CANADA.
