Meet Kaitlyn Wages and Gina Thomson of Origins Birth and Wellness Collective

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlyn Wages and Gina Thomson.

Kaitlyn and Gina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Origins Birth and Wellness Collective was started in 2013 with a vision to create not only a safe space for families to bring their babies into the world but also a place where women would be heard, valued and supported. We also wanted to incorporate the whole family so everyone could feel as though they were an integral part of the pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience! We have grown to fulfill the dream of a collective by partnering with many different types of care providers for women’s health during their pregnancy and beyond.

Soon after becoming midwives, we (Kaitlyn and Gina) were inspired to open our own birth center so we could give the gift of midwifery care that they were able to receive with our own pregnancies because it profoundly changed us as women and mothers. Our midwives here at Origins share our passion. We don’t view this as a “job” necessarily; it’s our calling. Our mamas and families are not just another “patient” behind a clipboard, but they become a part of our Origins family.

We know there is more to the woman than just the physiological aspect of being pregnant, and by doing so we eliminate the gap between the provider and the patient. We teach women and their family about the physiological, hormonal, and emotional impacts of pregnancy to the woman and the baby by bringing our years of expertise, skills, and knowledge. They are bringing an equal amount of value by teaching us about themselves, their family, and their family’s needs during pregnancy, labor and delivery, and their postpartum time. We listen, we hear, and pursue their hearts because we know that building relational trust is paramount in the health and safety of the pregnancy and out-of-hospital birth journey. We have since grown to have two locations (Fort Worth and Downtown Dallas), and are lucky to have an amazing business partner, Amy Tate, at our Dallas location.

Has it been a smooth road?
Building a business is never easy, no matter what industry you are in, but especially when you are in the business of birthing babies, mothers, women and families. We have sacrificed greatly over the years, as have our families, to establish the firm foundation that we are now built upon. We have a saying around here, “short term sacrifice for long term gain yields greatness. Get out of your own way, and do hard things.” We have learned over the years that when the road in front of you seems insurmountable, that the best thing to do is to just start and keep moving forward. We have learned to appreciate challenges as they have a way of building the strongest character. We truly believe the minute you stop learning; you stop growing. Learning from your mistakes are often the most valuable lessons in life.

Please tell us about Origins Birth and Wellness Collective.
At Origins, we are committed to offering exceptional midwifery care to expecting mothers and their growing families. Our comprehensive care includes but is not limited to: monitoring of maternal and fetal health during the prenatal, labor/birth, and postpartum periods, lab work, nutritional counseling, education, childbirth preparation, lactation counseling and newborn care. In our efforts to provide a holistic model of midwifery care; we tend to both the physiological and emotional aspects of pregnancy for the family.

Origins knows that caring for the woman’s physiological needs is only one facet of the mother/baby care. We know that when we care for the whole woman and family (the physiological and clinical needs, but also support the entire family by caring for your emotional needs, your spiritual needs, talking about circumstantial stressors, your family dynamics, etc) that we are improving birth outcomes, as many studies have shown. We know there is more to the woman than just “being pregnant” and by doing so we eliminate the gap between the provider and the patient. We teach you about the physiological impacts of pregnancy to the woman and the baby, by bringing our years of expertise, skills, and knowledge; but you are bringing an equal amount of value by teaching us about you, your family, yours and your family’s needs during pregnancy, labor and delivery, and your postpartum time. We listen, we hear, and pursue your hearts because we know that building relational trust is paramount in the health and safety of your pregnancy and out of hospital birth experience.

At Origins your midwives all believe that birth is sacred and should be treated as such. We put a priority on honoring the couple’s birthing space, and you will never feel that you are just another number, or just another “patient.” We believe that every new life is sacred and has a ripple effect on the world – this sweet new life changes not only the parent’s lives, but siblings, grand-parents and every other human being this tiny little person will ever encounter. We always say at Origins, that we aren’t just birthing babies but are birthing mothers, fathers, siblings, and families for generations to come!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Midwifery is a fast-growing industry in maternal healthcare. We have seen significant year-over-year growth. More families are looking into alternative healthcare that provides a wellness approach than ever before. There has been a dramatic shift in our culture towards holistic living, and more people are looking for a natural approach in caring for their body (as well as their babies!) We anticipate this trend continuing to grow!
