Meet Joy Obiselu of Her Textured Hair in Addison

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Obiselu.

Joy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Her Textured Hair (HTH) was officially launched in April of this year, although this was a venture that started way back in 2014. In the fall of 2014, I had just moved back to Dallas from finishing up law school in Houston and was awaiting my bar results. I’ve always been interested in hair and have always had an affinity for hair extensions as well as natural hair. At this time, I thought it would be a good idea to marry the two together and create a natural hair line that solely catered to women with natural hair. Unfortunately, after testing multiple hair samples and not getting the quality of hair I wanted, I gave up that dream as I did not have the funds at that time to continue testing hair.

Five years later, I got the urge to try again. I was more knowledgeable about the hair industry and had the time, patience, and finances to try again. After giving it some thought, HTH was born. Today, we are a brand that caters exclusively to black women who seek out natural hair extensions that match their type 3 and type 4 hair. From our launch date to the present, we have been able to cater to more than 500 women across the United States, Canada, Australia, and the UK. We hope to triple that number before our one year anniversary.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. We launched our business smack dab in the middle of Covid-19 and quarantine. Our business started experiencing these effects back in December and January, way before it became public knowledge. From delays in vendor communication, products, and packaging, we had to pivot and source many of our products locally, which resulted in our customers getting delays in their orders for the first couple of months.

Her Textured Hair – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My hair company is a niche company that exclusively caters to women who seek to wear hair extensions that match their natural hair. Specifically, women with type 4 and type 3 hair.

What I’m most proud of when it comes to HTH is the fact that we have been able to provide solutions to women who didn’t think it was possible to embrace their natural hair without forgoing comfortability and style. What’s sets my company apart from the others is that we truly care about providing hair extensions that match our natural hair perfectly. That we know of- we are the only hair extension brand that specifically carries a range of product curated to match one’s hair texture individually. If someone comes to us with 4c or 3c hair, they will be able to find hair extensions specifically for 4c hair and 3c hair.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far would have to be the reviews and private messages I get from women who encourage me to keep on going. The messages I get from women who have told me how much they loved our hair and the difference it made for them.

Knowing that there are women out there who could have shopped from anyone else but choose my brand and were satisfied with my product will always be the happiest for me.
