Today we’d like to introduce you to Clarke Davis.
Clarke, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a child, I’ve always been fascinated by the human body – how it works, why certain things happen things like that. At the age of nine, I started playing basketball and fell in with the game. This started my journey to combine my love for both the human body and sports to somehow help the people around me. First, it was an Orthopedic surgeon, then it was a physical therapist. However, in my junior year of college, the career I wanted for myself became a little less clear. I played basketball while in college and faced some obstacles, both physically and mentally. In 2013, my final year, I suffered my third concussion and was unable to complete my basketball season. In addition to my concussion, I began suffering from serve neck pain. Unfortunately, I suffered from serve neck pain for several years after but with faith in God and massage therapy, I’m happy to say I experience little to no neck pain these days.
In fall 2016, I rediscovered massage therapy. I was familiar with it but it was never something I did on a regular basis. The rediscovery of massage therapy was a result of Jesus, encouraging me to keep looking for a career in the health and wellness industry and looking for ways to combat my neck pain. Jan 2017, I started massage therapy school and my life was forever changed. I started my business, WOW Working on Wellness, officially in late 2018 and man, it’s been a journey. August 2020, I finally moved into my own location in Arlington, Texas and I’m very happy about it. I’m very grateful for the journey I’ve had thus far and looking forward to the challenges I have yet to overcome and the achievements I have yet to reach.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
What’s the saying, “Anything worthwhile is never easy.” Life is filled with obstacles and achievements. I believe you must go through obstacles to achieve anything lasting. My parents didn’t automatically support my decision to attend massage school because I had already tried other things prior and didn’t really stick with them. In addition to massage not being the most stable career choice, I had to take out a loan to attend massage school. Since I played basketball in college, I received my bachelor’s degree with zero loans so my parents saw no point in creating unnecessary debt. My parents’ doubts were very valid; however, I was willing to take the risk.
Another challenge I faced was creating clientele. I started my business making mobile appointments because I didn’t have an office yet. Trying to navigate between promoting my business but also realizing that there are crazy people out there whose house I would potentially be entering was tough sometimes. I appreciate all my friends who supported me at the beginning and still support me today. They really helped WOW Working on Wellness to stay afloat even when I wanted to give up. The challenge for me now is building a consistent clientele at the new location and acquiring more athletes as clients.
Please tell us about WOW Working on Wellness.
WOW Working on Wellness is a massage therapy business. I provide massage for individuals, events and companies. I offer massages such as Swedish, aromatherapy, deep tissue, sports, prenatal, CBD, couples and chair massage. I offer both in-office and mobile massage services. I specialize in what I like to call the “maintain and sustain’ approach. In other words, I’m invested in not only improving your quality of life but making it a new standard in your life. God created our bodies to move and I want to help others achieve a better lifestyle. My clients know anytime they come to see me not only will they leave feeling better but also more knowledgeable about how to maintain a healthier lifestyle for them specifically.
As a business, I’m most proud of not only doing quality bodywork but also building great relationships with my clients. What makes WOW Working on Wellness different from other massage therapy business is me. I, Clarke Davis, am not like any other massage therapist because simply there is only one me. I’ve realized that I could give someone the greatest massage ever and they still may prefer another therapist over me and that’s fine. I can’t services everyone, so those who value my work will continue to support me and the ones that don’t I hope they find the right therapist for them.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t think I would change anything about my journey. I’ve learned so many great lessons still learning throughout this process that I wouldn’t dare change anything.
