Meet Brooke Adams of Swayin’ Sparrow in Mabank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Adams.

Brooke, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
From the time I was very little, I always had a very outgoing personality and style. I remember being about three going into stores and knowing what size I needed, and I was able to pick out exactly what I wanted and somehow, it worked. The salesperson in the store would ask my grandmother if I needed any assistance and she would tell them, “No, she knows what she is looking for.” Aside from my weekly shopping trips, I was very well rounded in activities from a very young age, such as piano, cheer, singing, dance, and modeling for a small shop in Corsicana called The Children’s Shop. My mom would take me up to the store and they would take pictures of me for the local newspaper. I always loved knowing I would be able to dress up and leave with a Groovy Girl. As I got into high school and college, I continued to model and work for local boutiques and even ended up helping pick inventory out for the stores. I knew this was something I wanted to do because it never seemed like work.

During my junior year of college, I bit the bullet and started a small online boutique with the goals of it assisting me in paying for my graduate degree. I was determined to graduate debt-free and because of the small venture I took on, it did that and more. Upon starting my Masters, I decided to stay focused on school and work and put my little online shop to the side, but that did not last long. Two weeks before I graduated with my Masters, I got the urge to open a storefront. I knew by no longer having to work on schoolwork, I would inherit my much-needed free time or I could use that time to invest in myself and my community. My main goal was to establish a style that incorporates some trends but also allows me to set my own at a comfortable price point. In our quaint little shop, we offer ladies apparel, accessories, and home goods.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With support from my family, friends, and community, I have not experienced many challenges with Swayin’ Sparrow. I have received so much love and support and feel as though this is the backbone for my little shop. I feel as though my biggest challenge would be learning to manage my time and giving more control to my employees. I have the best staff and feel they are such an asset to the store.

Please tell us about Swayin’ Sparrow.
At Swayin’ Sparrow, we specialize in our ability to offer a wide range of options, from clothing and accessories to dish towels and laundry soap. The inventory in the shop actually fits the layout of the home we are nestled in. I feel our biggest compliment is when customers say they appreciate our prices and adore the home in which our shop is in. From the moment our customers walk in the door, they are greeted with our signature smell and a warm hello. I find it extremely important to be honest with customers and recommend what will look best on their body type and showing the different ways to style each piece. I handpick every item in the store and I have all of the special ladies looking to buy in mind. I consider all body types and look at different ways to style each piece so it is very versatile and can become a staple piece in their closet.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from my childhood would have the opportunity to grow up involved in many activities. Showing cattle quickly became my favorite thing to do. Because this was a way of life for me, I spent my summers in the barn every day and was taught from a young age the importance of a hard work ethic. I feel as though this is what set the foundation for my future and what has allowed me to be successful and ambitious. My parents have invested so much in me and have taught me how to hold myself accountable, multi-task, and to be self-motivated. I was very fortunate to have a structured upbringing and hope I am able to be an example to other young people.
