Meet Miguel Alatorre of I&A Quality Upholstery Furniture Service in Carrollton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miguel Alatorre.

Miguel, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story starts off with my father, Ignacio Alatorre. He is what I consider the hardest working man with so little given to him since he came here to Dallas, Texas. My father came from Mexico to find a better future for his family and in the hope of living the American dream. His dream was to own a business here in the states and provide his professional service to many people. I myself as a little kid, always thought the type of work my father was doing was really boring. Growing up, I realized what my father does, in reality, is art, I wanted to learn more of his skills and have the knowledge into growing our business, but most importantly supporting our family.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We’ve had to overcome a lot of obstacles, especially my father. When it all started back in 1990, my father starting off by trying to get his business out in public but wasn’t always easy back in the day without much of advanced technology. He uses to print out flyers and go around the metroplex passing out business cards, but not much success happened. Living in a home with a wife and four children can be complicated financially, but he has always had faith in a growth opportunity.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our business is a family-owned furniture upholstery/reupholstery company which started in 1990 at our workshop in Carrollton. Ignacio has over 30 years of experience and loves what he does, which is Art. What our company is known for is the hard work we put in to make our customers smile and what brings delight to our customer’s home. This is something I could say that I’m most proud of to see the happiest of other families. We pretty much give their used furniture a full makeover by the material or fabric they desire. Many customers instead of buying new sofas, club chairs, etc., they could contact us and we give them an estimate for the reupholstery. What sets up apart from others is not taking any shortcuts and understanding the customer, being a family-owned business, we don’t want to jeopardize what we have built for so long, therefore we treat our customers as our first priority.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was given a lot of opportunities from my father. He was always supportive of my decisions and my future, trying to lead me into the right path to be successful in life. As a kid, my dream was to become a professional soccer player and travel all over the world. Growing up, I realized it was a lot harder than expected. Within that time, I was learning a lot the basics of reupholstery (taking out stables from the furniture, re-stuffing saggy sofas, working on the sewing machine), which was all boring to me at the time. I didn’t really understand why my father loved his work so much. As I got older, it all came clear to me.
