Meet Chaunhi Le

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chaunhi Le.

Chaunhi, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Designs by Chaunhi started a little after I impulsively bought myself an iPad a couple of years back in 2018. I had trouble sleeping most nights, so I would end up drawing to help pass the time until I eventually fell asleep. I began posting some of these drawings on my social media accounts, not expecting anyone to care, but people were actually really kind and supportive! Little by little, all these cool commissions started to come in. Commissions would vary from logos, screen-printing and packaging designs to my current favorite, jean jackets. I had no clue how to do most of these things when I first started, so it’s crazy to think about it now. I’m so, so grateful that I have had the sweetest people as clients, who encouraged my learning with their patience and trust. My friends and family have been crazy supportive on top of that. I have big plans to open up an art shop and to make t-shirts sometime in the near future!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would be lying if I said it was anything less than a hot mess. I failed so much. I remember this one particular professor that told me that he didn’t know how I even got into his class while critiquing my work (in front of everyone). After that class ended, I walked to the nearest dumpster and tossed my entire portfolio into it. Looking back, it seems really dramatic, but I think I really took it to heart because I didn’t believe in myself back then.

We’d love to hear more about your art.
I’m a graphic designer that specializes in branding, logos and packaging design. I’ve recently ventured off into stickers and screen-printing, so I can’t wait to see what I’ll be able to do with that. I’m most known, though, for my jean jacket designs. Jean jacket commissions have gotten pretty popular, even more so than logos. It’s the perfect weather too, now that it’s fall time.

I’m most proud of the fact that I get to design for other local businesses. I know it takes a lot of trusts to hand over your vision of your business to someone else, but I make it a point to let my clients know that I’m just as invested in their brand and business as they are!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
The only thing I would have done differently would be walking past the dumpster instead of emptying my portfolio bag into it.
