Today we’d like to introduce you to Rhontae Scales.
Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. You can include as little or as much detail as you’d like.
So, I sat down and thought to myself “ what is something you will always remember?”. Something you smell. Of course you wont like everything you smell but when you find your favorite cologne or perfume you remember. And you will always remember how it smells when you are having a good time from the funnel cake at a carnival to the way it smells when you are on vacation. I like candles so I wanted to start my own business giving people some fragrances to match with their memories. I read a book called Contagious – Why Things Catch On by Jonah Berger and the book taught me how to make a common product different from the rest while attracting people’s attention. I know many independent musical artists so I thought about what I like to do when candles are burning in my house and that’s play music and get the vibe right. I learned how to make candles over time on youtube and doing my own research. Purchased all my products and went to work producing some quality candles with the price. Took my own pictures and created my labels, packaging and marketing. Established Champion Candle Co and slapped a second label with some independent music on it for people to listen to while they burn my candles. Champion Candles has been thriving ever since the start. I’m happy to be my own boss, my business is thriving even during a pandemic and I’m able to spend everyday with my family. Nipsey Hussle once said “the best teacher in life is your own experience none of us know who we are until we fail ”. I live by that everyday, I failed making it to the NFL, I failed at finding a decent job for a long time, I failed at everything that I mastered or became good at. I respect the struggle and hustle because how you react defines who you are. I’ve overcome a lot and I’m still standing and building onto my foundation so my kids can never work for anybody and have a business to lean on if they choose.
Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Honestly, I started off pretty smooth. I made sure I was prepared and had a good idea of what I was doing so I didn’t waste my products and materials. There were some small mistakes and measurement adjustments for my candles to become stronger. I had an issue finding a printer to print the labels I wanted which was a challenge. My ink wasn’t sticking to the material I chose. But for people that make candles, there are a lot of obstacles to face from the proper wick for the right jar, fragrance to wax ratio, labels, pictures, presentation, marketing and so on. Everybody’s journey is different.
Tell us about your business/company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
Champion Candle Co is a Home/Home decor business that produces handmade candles and we specialize in candles and allowing exposure to independent artists. I’m most proud of the fact I created a product that is worth the money people are paying. I’m proud that Champion Candle Co hit the ground running and generated profit instantly due to the amount of support for the community and across the US. What sets Champion Candle Co apart from the rest is the quality of the wax and fragrances. All candles are produced handmade without toxic ingredients which comes with music. This adds to the value of the candles and allows the artist more exposure. How many candles have you purchased that gives you an artist to research and listen to?
What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
None, I don’t believe in luck. I believe in energy/fate so whatever you put your time and energy into something will come out. Any good things that happen to my business I believe it’s for me. Anything bad happens I use it as a learning experience. So is it bad luck when you can learn from it and have the knowledge to fix or handle it next time? I think it’s fate when you can’t always control the events of your life.
