Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamarus Martinez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jamarus. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Ever since I was a kid, I enjoyed cooking… baking to be exact. I was just good at cooking. I lived with my dad, step-mom, three of my four brothers, step-sister, grandma, and two uncles. One question all of them asked me often is “What are you gonna cook today, Marus”! The rest is pretty much history. It wasn’t until the pandemic happened and everyone was forced into a quarantine that I finally decided to put my food where my mouth is!
Right before quarantine started, I went to a party that happened to be catered. Everyone was talking about the food and how awful it was. I thought to myself, “Well, if people will pay for awful fool, they’ll definitely pay for my food”! And, Hiz Catering started.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The only obstacle really at that time was an of faith and having to work my full-time job; my side hustle started to feel like a full time job.
Please tell us about Hiz Catering.
I love to bake, and my baking game is no joke! I have perfected the taste of a moist cake! I am willing to bet almost anything you won’t have tasted a more moist cake than mine. I’m just saying… I noticed among a lot of bakers that monogram cakes (number/letter cakes) were becoming a trend. However, I saw a lot of them being done, just not the way I envisioned I would do them in my head. I’m a little bit of a perfectionist so I played with different methods to ensure my work looked very clean and precise. I wanted my monogram cakes to look very expensive and chic!! I wanted people to look at them and be like, “OMG, that’s almost too pretty to eat”!!!
The more I baked, I started to become more creative with different themes, color designs and what I added to the top of the actual cake. A lot of other bakers would just throw a few pieces of candy and fake flowers and be like, “Okay, I’m done.” I decided to take my time and be very detailed with everything I put on my cakes for whatever theme they could possibly want from Bebe’s kids to 90s theme. I couldn’t believe how much business and support I received from just doing my one style of cakes. I used to think I wouldn’t be able to fully support myself or open a store because of that reason… I mainly only do one style of cake. Then I thought to myself, “Other cake shops or stores only sell one thing or only have one style of cake and five flavors.” If they can, I can! I have finally found my niche and I can’t wait for everyone to see what new things I have in store. Not just number and letter cakes, but monogram cakes in general.
Have you ever had an actual cake that spells your name?
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Too many- they all involve my siblings and usually led to trouble! I’ll say just being in the yard being a kid with my siblings, not having to worry about anything in the world, just hoping I got to stay up late that night.
