Meet Kedrick Smith

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I first picked up a camera when I was around 12 years old. I had gotten away from photography for a few years during high school and college, but I’ve been working on my art seriously for over a year now.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
This has not been a smooth road at all! For most of the time, I didn’t have my own camera, so I only had an opportunity to practice my skills while at work. I also didn’t know what I really liked to shoot for almost a year because of me not owning my own camera and just shooting what I wanted. I would say, though, over the past few months, things have been going very well for me.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a photographer. I’ve recently become known primarily for my horror photos, but I personally like to focus on more portrait/documentary work. At the moment I’m most proud of my project I’m working on called, “Life In 50”. It’s a photo book I’m working on that’ll document how life in all 50 states has been affected by the pandemic.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
For the most part, I’m a self-taught photographer. When I was first starting out with photography, I watched a ton of YouTube videos! The one channel I watched a lot of was “Becki & Chris”. A tip I got from their channel was to take my camera everywhere I go and shoot any and everything. Even now that I’m a more respected photographer, I still follow this tip. This is how I learned what type of photography I wanted to do long-term.
