Today we’d like to introduce you to Girls in STEM: Gauri Pala (President), Sophie Lin (Co-VP), Kelly Yin (Co-VP), Devika Nambisan (Secretary), Tracy Nguyen (Public Relations Officer).
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Sophie and I (Gauri) were both really interested in careers that were apart of the STEM pathway, but we noticed that not many girls know about the fields in STEM so we created our club at school called Girls in STEM. Our club, Girls in STEM, is part of a larger non-profit organization that was founded in Plano and currently has chapters all over the world. Through Girls in STEM, we are dedicated to closing the gender gap in the STEM field by exposing our peers to careers in which they never would’ve known before. We host different STEM-related activities, invite guest speakers, and contribute to the community through volunteering. So far, we have reached about 30 girls at our school and looking to expand even more!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Overall, it has been pretty smooth, but one of the biggest struggles we had along the way was getting the word out about our club. Since we were a new club, it was hard to get members in the beginning, but we definitely have overcome that!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your organization?
Through our club at school, we introduce the STEM pathway to girls who don’t have this exposure with hopes of them pursuing it in the future. We host different activities (all relating to the different STEM careers), invite guest speakers to talk about their experience as a girl in STEM, and provide community service opportunities for our members.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can work with us if they are willing to be a guest speaker at one of our meetings or help get the word out to other students at Liberty High School to join our club.
