Today we’re excited to introduce you to Steve Malouf. We were introduced to them by one of our community members and content partners – Carolyn Ellis. Check out our conversation with Steve below.
Steve, thanks for taking the time to share your story with us today. So, let’s start with your personal story – what can you share with us?
I am an attorney in Dallas and a collector of Carolyn Ellis original paintings. My practice includes commercial litigation and international law and has included representation of clients in disputes arising out of mining exploration and production in Canada, Russia, Madagascar, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sierra Leone, Namibia, and Zambia.
Thanks for sharing that with us. How about obstacles and struggles – has it been a smooth road?
I started my firm 35 years ago and faced the same challenges that any startup faces, from locating office space to funding my practice. Thankfully, the firm has had 35 years of success.
We’d love to hear more about your experience with Carolyn Ellis.
I met Carolyn on a trip to visit with a client in Athens, Texas. I had lunch at a restaurant across the street from Carolyn’s gallery and was intrigued by what I saw through the gallery window, especially Carolyn’s use of bold colors and geometric shapes in her paintings. After lunch I decided to visit the gallery and was immediately hooked on Carolyn’s exceptional talent. We have stayed in touch over the years and my collection of Carolyn Ellis art continues to grow.
Our lives and careers sometimes throw extremely difficult challenges our way. Do you have any advice for someone facing what they feel are insurmountable challenges?
Yes. Start by reading David Brooks’s article titled The Moral Bucket List. This will help keep things in perspective. All too often we are faced with challenges that don’t reveal any clear solution. It is important to recognize that the fact that a solution is not apparent to us, doesn’t mean there is no solution. It is likely that someone else has faced the same or very similar challenges and successfully met the challenge. For this reason, the best response to despair is sharing it with someone else who can provide a fresh perspective and provide guidance on the path forward.
