Today we’d like to introduce you to Robi Heath.
Hi Robi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Kid Talk formed about eight years ago when I was looking for a way to serve the community where I resided at the time. I did not always want to be a therapist, nor did I know that the career even existed. I went to college and majored in Political Science thinking I would move onto law school and thank goodness that path did not happen for me! I fell into my first grown-up job working with the State of Texas at Child Protective Services. It was hard work and often heartbreaking but the families and kiddos I got to work with made me want to do more.
From there, I decided I wanted to be on the healing end of things and working with families to prevent generational patterns. I wanted to help families find healing and joy. From there, I got my Master’s in Counseling and a few years later switched my career to being a counselor. In graduate school, I specialized in play therapy, which is an evidence-based approach to working with children. I LOVE using this special way of being with kids as a way to find healing and to make hard work in therapy fun. I started Kid Talk to create a unique place where kiddos, families and parents could come to seek healing and find joy in the family connections. I am honored to walk alongside so many families with a variety of life changes.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Prior to starting my business, it was not an easy road. I worked full time at Child Protective Services and did graduate courses at night. I often did not sleep and remember sacrificing so much to further my education. Once I graduated, things smoothed out and I could just focus on being the best therapist. The path got much smoother when I met my husband, Steven, when I was in graduate school. He has been my rock and anchor and always has been there to support me to be the best version of myself. As far as starting my business, Kid Talk it has been pretty smooth as I have an amazing support system with my husband. I LOVE what I do so work feels easy and I am so honored I get to build a career helping.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Kid Talk?
Kid Talk is a mental health counseling office where we specialize in helping kiddos, teens, parents, and adults. We use evidence-based approaches to helping families heal and find joy in their relationships. We do specialize in a few things, such as play therapy, which is an approach to counseling that uses a child’s natural language to get a glimpse into their world. Once we get to see this intimate side of a child through interacting with them through their play, we are able to learn what is driving a child’s behavior and can create a plan to help parents. We also specialize in a type of therapy called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which can help process traumatic events and facilitate healing. We work hard to make counseling fun and interactive so families enjoy their time with our staff and office.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I had a fairy counselor godmother (that is what I call her) named Katherine Hilton, who hand-held me through the process of starting my business. She was sent to me at just the right time as she was looking for someone to lease her space and I needed a counseling office to start my business. She was amazing and walked me through so many new things with my business. I owe her so much! My best advice is to see other people in the field as resources, not competition. That has been the best for me to create a community of those in the same field and we can support each other. I am lucky to have started off my business with this amazing fairy godmother in my corner.
